TRI-CITIES, Tenn./Va. (WJHL) — Following yesterday’s severe weather and hail storms, Sunday’s rain has resulted in flooding throughout the region.
Mark Nagi with the Tennessee Department of Transportation warned drivers to travel with safety as the flooding continues into the afternoon Sunday.
The region’s road conditions
We reached out to area dispatch centers to gather reports of road conditions in the region.
Northeast Tennessee
Greene County
Several roads are closed in the county, including the following: Poplar Springs Road, Shackleford Road, Carpenter’s Chapel Road, Pottertown Road, Fairfield Road, Crumley Road, Marvin Road, Wisecarver Road, the Iron Bridge side of Gilbreath Mill Road and Oakdale Drive.
The county’s highway department is working the closures to clear roadways.
Sullivan County
Dispatch warns drivers to use caution at the lower end of the county. Roads are flooded near Reservoir Road. No roads have been closed.
Carter County
There are no road closures, but drivers are asked to use caution in the Sian Road area. The highway department continues to move water out of the street to clear the roadways.
Johnson County
Dispatch said many roads are flooded due to being in a rural area. A mudslide was reported on the 4800 block of Roan Creek (Highway 167). TDOT is responding to assist the highway department with clearing it.
UPDATE: Johnson County EMA Director Jason Blevins told us the mudslide has since been cleared.
Hawkins County
The Hawkins County Emergency Management Agency reported multiple road closures throughout the county on Sunday due to flooding and inclement weather.
Bristol, Tennessee
Campgrounds at Bristol Motor Speedway have flooded, prompting BMS to provide other campsites for those who had to move due to the weather.
Southwest Virginia
Abingdon
There are several reported road closures, according to the Abingdon, Virginia Police Department.
Road closures include the 300 block of East Main Street, Tunnel Street from Old Saltworks Road and Deadmore Street NE that connects Main Street and Valley Street.
Abingdon Public Works Director John Dew said the roads will reopen as conditions allow.
“Roads will open as conditions allow based on additional rainfall,” Dew said. “Forecast is favorable later today. Tunnel Street would likely open sooner than others.”
Lee County
Lee County dispatch reported two road closures in the county, including Highway 421 going into Pennington and Ocoonita Road at Lee High School.
Buchanan County
The Knox Creek Fire Department warned community members of mudslides and flooded roadways on Sunday afternoon.
According to the department, this is specifically in the Guesses Fork and coon Branch sections of Hurley, Virginia, as well as the Council/Davenport, Big Rocks, Breaks and the Greenbireier section of Prater.
KCFD recommends people avoid traveling if possible.
