14 Essential Items You Should Always Have in Your Car This Winter

If you live or travel somewhere that experiences winter weather, you know cold, snowy, and icy conditions can have a significant impact on travel times. Unfortunately, these conditions often play a role in traffic accidents and lengthy delays as well.

It’s always smart to have emergency supplies in your vehicle, but it becomes even more important in the winter so you can deal with unexpected situations. That preparation is sure to pay off in the event you are in an accident or encounter travel delays.

To help you better prepare for winter travel, here are the 14 essential items you should always have in your vehicle this winter.

1. Combination Ice Scraper And Snow Brush

Of course, it’s always important to clear your vehicle’s windshields of snow and ice before traveling. And if you are involved in an accident or encounter a long delay, snow and ice can quickly pile up while you wait. Having a long-handled combination ice scraper and snow brush handy helps you clean windshields quickly.

2. Windshield De-Icer

Clearing ice from a windshield can be a lengthy process using an ice scraper. If you keep a bottle of de-icer handy, you can use it on your vehicle’s windows and windshields to remove ice quickly. For faster results, you can apply the de-icer and then begin scraping the ice with your combination ice scraper and snow brush once the ice begins to melt.

3. Jumper Cables Or Jumper Box

It’s always a good idea to have a pair of jumper cables in your vehicle during winter — that’s because low temperatures reduce the cranking power of a battery — but sometimes there are no cars around to do the jumping. That’s why we recommend keeping a charged jumper box in your car at all times, but especially during winter. Most modern jumper boxes also include USB ports to charge your devices as well.

4. Shovel And Sand/Kitty Litter

You’ll find a shovel is extremely useful in several situations. Look for a compact shovel or one that folds or is collapsible so it’s easy to store. You can use it to remove snow from around your vehicle’s tires if you run off the road, helping the tires get more traction.

Furthermore, if your vehicle’s tires are spinning, you can use a shovel to put dirt or snow under the tires. You can also keep sand or kitty litter on hand. The sand or kitty litter will provide the extra grit the tires need to gain traction. You can even spread the gritty stuff with the shovel you have on hand.

Pro Tip: In a pinch, you can also place your car’s floor mats under its tires to gain traction.

5. Warm Clothes

If you are involved in an accident or encounter a lengthy delay, you may not be able to run the car’s heater as long as you’d like. Be sure your vehicle has extra coats, hats, and gloves for you and anybody traveling with you so you can all stay warm. You can also put disposable hand warmers in your gloves and socks for an extra measure of heat.

Pro Tip: Be sure you also pack a pair of snow boots. You’ll need them if you have to get out of the vehicle to clear snow or icy slush that’s around the tires.

6. Blankets

That said, an extra coat may not be enough to keep you warm. Be sure to keep some blankets in your vehicle so you can cover up if necessary. Thermal blankets made of dual-sided aluminized mylar not only retain body heat, they also repel rain and snow in case you are outside your vehicle.

7. Roadside Flares, Reflective Triangles, Or LED Flashers

If your vehicle does run off the road or you are involved in an accident, you’ll want to ensure it’s visible so help can find you — and prevent another vehicle from hitting you. Flares, hazard triangles, and LED flashers will all help mark your location and give other drivers notice to reduce their speed and avoid your vehicle.

8. Flashlight

Simply put, a flashlight will help you see what you’re doing in the dark. It can also make looking for any of these materials easier if they are pushed into the back of your car’s trunk. Plus, if you don’t have flares or hazard triangles, you can always use the flashlight to signal passing vehicles.

9. A Tow Strap

You’ll need a tow strap to free any trapped vehicles. If you are using a tow strap, make sure someone stays in the car being rescued to steer and use the brakes as needed.

10. Portable Phone Charger And Battery

During emergencies, you’ll want to call for help — and that’s no time to realize your cellphone’s battery is dead. Be sure to have a car charger in your vehicle. It’s also important to keep a portable battery or power bank on-hand. That way you can charge your phone even if the vehicle’s battery is dead.

11. First-Aid Kit

It’s always important to keep a first-aid kit in your vehicle. It should include bandages, adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, scissors, gauze, and any other items you may need in case of injury.

12. Non-Perishable Food And Water

To be prepared for especially long delays or emergencies, keep non-perishable foods, such as protein or granola bars and canned goods, in your vehicle. Be sure to also pack enough water for everyone in the vehicle in case you are stuck for hours.

Pro Tip: If you are traveling with pets, be sure you have food and water for them as well.

13. Personal Hygiene Items

If you are stranded for a long time, it may be difficult to take care of personal hygiene. To help, make sure your emergency kit has some moist towelettes and even toilet paper.

14. Extra Windshield-Wiper Fluid

Extra windshield-wiper fluid may not be necessary in an emergency, but vehicles use more wiper fluid in the winter as drivers struggle to clean windshields. As long as you’re packing a winter essentials kit, be sure to add extra wiper fluid so you’ll be prepared.

Pro Tip: If you plan to store a jug of wiper fluid in your vehicle, make sure you buy a fluid formulated for winter. That way it won’t freeze.

Know Before You Go

Of course, if you are planning to travel in the winter, be sure your vehicle’s tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread. You’ll also want to ensure your vehicle always has at least a half tank of fuel so it doesn’t run out at an inopportune time.

Finally, if your vehicle does run off the road, AAA reminds everyone to stay with your vehicle: It not only provides shelter, staying with the vehicle also makes it easier for rescuers to find you.

AAA also notes that if you are involved in an accident or encounter a lengthy delay, it’s important to conserve fuel in your vehicle. That can be accomplished by only running the engine and heater long enough to remove the chill, and then shutting it off.

Warriors vs. Bulls – Game Recap – January 14, 2022

CHICAGO — — Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points, Stephen Curry added 19 and the Golden State Warriors rolled to their most lopsided win of the season, dominating the Chicago Bulls 138-96 on Friday night.

Rookie Jonathan Kuminga finished with 25 points and Jordan Poole scored 22.

The Warriors broke out of their rut in a huge way, pulling away early after dropping four of five. It was just the sort of breather they needed coming off a lopsided loss at defending champion Milwaukee the previous night.

The Bulls lost star Zach LaVine to a left knee injury in the opening minutes. They got booed off the court trailing 78-47 at halftime and wound up with their worst loss this season.

Wiggins scored 20 in the first half and shot 8 of 11 in the game. Curry shook off a slow start in a total turnaround for the Warriors after they trailed 77-38 at halftime in Milwaukee on Thursday.

Poole nailed five 3-pointers, and the Warriors made it look easy even though they were missing Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

Nikola Vucevic had 19 points and 14 rebounds for Chicago. Coby White added 20 points, and DeMar DeRozan scored 17.

But the Bulls lost for the third time in four games after winning nine straight to match their best streak since the end of the end of the 2010-11 regular season.

Things took an alarming turn for them when LaVine — who tore the ACL in his left knee playing for Minnesota in February 2017 — walked gingerly toward the locker room with 8:28 left in the first quarter. The All-Star and Olympic gold medalist never went to the ground.

From there, things didn’t get any better for the Bulls.

After hanging with Kevin Durant and the Nets into the third quarter before Brooklyn blew them out two nights earlier, they were never really in this one.

The Warriors led 37-28 through the first quarter despite just two points from Curry, then outscored Chicago 41-19 in the second. The 78 points were the most in a half for Golden State this season and the most allowed by the Bulls.

Curry scored the first six points in an 11-0 run that Wiggins finished with a driving bank shot, making it 54-33 with about 7 minutes left in the half.

TIP-INS

Warriors: The Warriors rested Thompson as planned after he played 20 minutes at Milwaukee in his third game back. They plan to “bump him up a little bit” when they visit Minnesota on Sunday, coach Steve Kerr said. The five-time All-Star missed 2 1/2 years because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament and an Achilles tendon injury. … Kerr is “hopeful” Green (left calf tightness) returns Tuesday when the Warriors host Detroit. Green missed his third consecutive game and Kerr said it makes more sense to have him continue rehabbing in the Bay Area rather than join the team at Minnesota.

Bulls: G Alex Caruso was not planning to travel with the team to Boston and Memphis. He missed his 11th game in a row, the past five because of COVID-19 after being sidelined with a sprained left foot. … The Bulls signed F Malcolm Hill to a 10-day hardship contract. Hill played at Illinois from 2013-14 to 2016-17 and grew up near St. Louis in Belleville, Ill.

UP NEXT

Warriors: Visit Minnesota on Sunday.

Bulls: Visit Boston on Saturday.

14 Best Magnetic Lashes of 2022 – WWD

When the lashes you covet are full and voluminous, but your natural pair doesn’t meet your standards, there are a few beauty tools that can help. The first is a good mascara that can transform your lashes in just a few swipes of an applicator wand when you want a quick fix; the second is a pair (or two, or ten) of fake eyelashes.

The transformative power of false eyelashes knows no bounds. Artificial wispies can make sparse eyelashes look fuller, elongate a shorter pair or turn up their volume to full blast. Unfortunately, selecting a pair of falsies that can help you achieve your ideal eye look is the easy part. Successfully applying false lashes can be a challenge (not to mention a test of patience), and that’s where magnetic lashes come in.

Top Magnetic Lashes

What are magnetic lashes, and how do they work?

According to makeup artist Gilbert Soliz, magnetic lashes are faux lashes that “contain micro magnets along the strip of the lash that allow them to attach together, or adhere to the lash line using magnetic eyeliner that contains iron oxide.” In other words, they’re yet another example of the scientific mastery that can be found in the beauty industry. They’re also just a much easier alternative to traditional faux lashes that require some sort of glue to adhere to the skin.

Are magnetic lashes safe to use?

In a word, yes. However, given that the eye is one of the most sensitive areas of the human body, optometrist and founder of Line of Sight Dr. Jennifer Tsai tells WWD there are some potential concerns you should be aware of. For example, because magnetic lashes can be heavy on the lid, regular use could lead to loss of natural lashes. What’s more, they can cause a corneal abrasion — scratching on the surface of your cornea, aka the clear, protective layer of your eye — though Tsai says this rarely occurs with false lashes.

In fact, according to Tsai, because magnetic eyeliners are designed with tiny iron oxides that adhere to the magnet on the false lashes, magnetic lashes, unlike traditional alternatives, can “reduce lash loss” since they do not sit on your natural lashes. The downside to magnetic eyeliners, however, is that the iron oxide found in them does have “pigment-containing minerals” that can potentially cause staining and skin darkening, Tsai warns. She adds that those with sensitive skin can also develop an allergic reaction to the magnetic glue, including contact dermatitis, blepharitis, swollen itchy lids and eczema.

That being said, overall, Tsai tells WWD she does recommend using magnetic lashes over traditional faux lashes, but in moderation. “[Just remember to] always thoroughly remove the eyeliner and lashes after each use.”

How to apply magnetic lashes

Arguably the best part of using magnetic lashes over traditional faux wispies is how easy it is to apply them. But keep in mind that how you apply magnetic lashes will depend on the type of magnetic lashes you’re using.

For example, if you have a top and bottom strip that sandwiches your lashes, celebrity makeup artist and brand founder Jenny Patinkin says there are two ways to go about it. “You can use a tool that you use to position them over the roots of your lash line and then pinch them together, or you can hold the upper lashes in place and manually snap the lower lashes into place,” she tells WWD. If you’re using magnetic lashes that are designed to adhere to a magnetic liner, then “just apply the liner as close to the upper lash line as you can and place the strip of lashes on top,” she adds.

As for prep work, television makeup artist Suzanne Perez advises applying your eye makeup — including mascara and eyeliner — before applying false lashes, magnetic or otherwise. When you’re ready to take your magnetic lashes off, keep them clean by dipping the lashes in rubbing alcohol and using a Q-tip to remove any adhesive or makeup. From there, Perez says, “let them dry in a clean area or container for future use.”

Just don’t scrub too hard and be patient; it will all come off with enough light rubbing.”

14 Tips For First-Timers Visiting The Macy’s Day Parade

For nearly 100 years, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been a must-watch event for millions of people. In years past, more than 3 million people have come into New York to view the parade. The floats, the music, the pageantry. It’s an amazing spectacle. Picture huge balloons, thousands of dancers, bands from all over the country, clowns, and much more.

Have you dreamt about going but don’t know where to start? Are you intimidated by the crowds? Don’t know how to dress for the day? And, what about bathrooms?

This post is for you. We’ll tell you how to go and what you’ll need to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

1. Catch A Glimpse Of The Balloons Coming To Life

The balloons are always a hit of the parade. Imagine Pikachu, Astronaut Snoopy, and Ada Twist flying above you. This year, Tiptoe is expected to be the first balloon puppet to march (or prance) the route. If you loved The Mandalorian, Grogu will also be making his debut in 2021. The balloons are huge. Grogu is expected to be 41 feet tall, 29 feet long, and 37 feet wide.

Our favorite activity is watching the balloons come to life. It’s free to do in the day/evening before the parade. If you are in the city, head up to the Upper West Side where the balloons are lined up on the ground starting at 1 p.m. We used to go at 11 p.m. and just wander the streets watching as the balloons grew to their full size. Now it’s more organized and the hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. It can be crowded in the early evening hours.

The balloon inflation takes place on the streets between 77th and 81st streets near Central Park West.

2. Don’t Watch The Parade Near Herald Square

Herald’s Square is the location of Macy’s flagship store and the energy in the crowd is infectious. It’s also the most crowded place to watch. If you decide to watch from near Herald Square, you may be far from the action even if you get there very early.

You don’t need to be super close to see the balloons, but if you want to see the performers — the Big Apple Circus, Jumpers United (national and international jump rope champions), Ballet Hispanico, clowns, marching bands, and others — you need to be able to see the street level.

3. Try Viewing On The Upper Westside

You may be able to find a closer view and fewer crowds on the Upper Westside section of the parade route. It’s where the parade starts at 9 a.m., so you’ll have to get there earlier. The parade will pass by earlier if you must be somewhere afterward. Anywhere along Central Park West is a good spot. Columbus Circle is also a good spot but it’s well-known and gets crowded.

4. Check The Parade Route

Most recently, the parade started at 9 a.m. near 75th and Central Park West and went south to Central Park South then east to 6th Avenue and down 6th Avenue to Herald Square. The route gets released on the website every year. Before you go, check the parade route on Macy’s website to make sure there haven’t been any changes to the route.

5. Decide Where You Want To Stand A Day Early

We like to decide our target location the day (or week) before the parade. We scout out the nearby bathrooms, places to eat (takeout), and the nearest subway stop. If you are new to the city, determine how long it will take you to get there very early in the morning. Will you take a taxi, car service, or the subway? Keep in mind that the subway doesn’t run as often in the very early hours of the morning.

6. Get There Very Early

The parade begins at 9 a.m. To get the perfect spot, you need to arrive at least 3 hours before it begins. Yes, that means 6 a.m. This is especially true if you’re going to Herald Square. They don’t sell any tickets or have any special areas for the elderly or for people needing accessibility.

7. Be Prepared To Wait

You’ll need to hold your spot and not move for several hours before the parade and for the duration of the parade. Being part of a group will make it easier. We recommend dressing in layers and bringing snacks and drinks. If you have children, you will need something to keep them entertained while you wait.

8. Learn About Balloons And Floats on the Parade 101 Page

We recommend viewing the Parade 101 page on Macy’s website before you go, especially if you plan to bring children. There are videos about balloon design and inflation and float building. In addition, you’ll find parade-themed coloring pages, games, word searches, and more that you can print out and bring with you during the parade.

9. Check The Weather Forecast

The parade takes place rain, shine, or freezing cold. There is one condition that does have a big impact on the parade — wind. Gusts of more than 34 miles an hour make it hard to control the balloons. They’ve been completely grounded only once — in 1971 — but sometimes the balloons are flown lower when it is windy.

10. Consider Watching From Inside

For a more comfortable experience, you may want to view the parade from indoors at a restaurant on the route or at The Shops at Columbus Circle. For restaurants, you might need to make reservations far in advance.

At the shops, you need to arrive before it opens to secure a good viewing location. The shops generally open at 10 a.m. but sometimes open earlier for the parade. In any event, you need to arrive at least 1-2 hours prior to secure a good spot. The downside to watching indoors is that you don’t feel the same energy that you’ll experience outdoors. On the other hand, you’ll be warm and have easy access to bathrooms.

11. Splurge On A Hotel On The Route

For a more comfortable and (very) expensive experience, you can rent a room at a hotel on the route. The Mandarin Oriental, the New York Hilton Midtown, Trump International Hotel & Tower, the Ritz-Carlton New York, and the Warwick New York are a few of the possibilities. You’ll need to book well in advance to secure a room. And make sure to double-check the parade route to make sure that nothing has changed. Some of these hotels will also have VIP areas on the street for viewing the parade.

12. Don’t Drive Into New York

Thanksgiving Day is a major gridlock day in New York City. It’s best to avoid driving into New York. Taking mass transit into the city will save you from hours in traffic coming in and leaving the city.

13. Hang Around After The Parade

We just recommended not driving into the city. At the same time, the trains and subways are massively crowded as soon as the parade ends. Consider making a lunch reservation a few blocks away from the parade so you can relax and warm up (and use the bathroom). Once you’re done with your meal, you have an easier time with the subways and trains.

14. Do It At least Once

We recommend going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade at least once. The balloons are fun to see. The performances are incredible. The bands play their hearts out. And the clowns will make you laugh. If you love it, come again and again.

If you have more time in New York City, consider these other options:

International travel update, 14 December 2021

The government has conducted a review of the temporary and precautionary international travel measures introduced to slow the spread of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant.

From 4am on Wednesday 15 December 2021, all 11 remaining countries and territories will be removed from the red list. As such, passengers arriving from Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe will not have to stay in a managed quarantine hotel on arrival in England from this date.

As Omicron cases rise in the UK and in countries around the world, the travel red list is less effective in slowing the incursion of the variant from abroad and these temporary measures are no longer proportionate.

While all countries have been removed, the red list policy remains in place alongside the managed quarantine service policy, acting as a crucial line of defence against the importation of variants of concern.

The additional temporary testing measures for passengers taken in response to Omicron also remain in place. The government recognises the impact that these temporary health measures have on the travel and aviation industry, and they will be reviewed again in the first week of January.

14 Things Our Expert Flight Attendant Always Has In His Carry-On

Over two decades as a flight attendant for American Airlines taught me a thing or two about packing. What I pack in my carry-on bag depends on whether I’m traveling domestically or internationally. If my domestic flight gets delayed or canceled, I can usually purchase whatever I may need, so my carry-on bag is a little lighter than when I travel abroad.

I’ve said “if I only had” way too many times. From entertainment to necessities, here’s what I always pack in my carry-on for domestic travel. I hope my suggestions will help you on your next adventure!

1. Portable Charger Power Bank

A multi-functional charger will help save your computer, cell phone, tablet, and other electronic devices from going dead. I personally like the Kanex — it has a space for your Apple Watch to charge wirelessly.

2. Charger Cables For All Your Electronics

Purchase an extra set of charger cables for all your electronics that you can just leave in your travel bag. Also, make sure you include a USB wall charger as most airports will have an A/C outlet to plug into.

3. Something To Read

I usually don’t pack heavy books or magazines. Instead, I always have my iPad or Kindle to keep me entertained. I can also watch movies or shows that I’ve downloaded on my iPad.

4. Headphones

Headphones are a must on flights if you want to watch a movie or listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook. Don’t leave home without them!

5. Games

I also like to bring a game to play, like a deck of cards or a travel-size cribbage board game. It’s a good way to make friends on the plane or at the gate, and you can always play with your seatmates if you get stuck on the tarmac.

6. Travel TP

From time to time, we have been known to run out of toilet paper on the airplane, as you sometimes find in the terminal. That’s why I always carry travel toilet paper. The pocket-sized pack doesn’t take up much room in your bag, and can literally save your behind.

7. Soap And Sanitizer

Sometimes the aircraft lavatories also run out of soap. That’s why I always carry soap sheets. They dissolve in water and lather like regular soap. Soap sheets can keep you fresh during long delays. I also pack a washcloth, just in case. Wet wipes and hand sanitizer always come in handy, too.

8. First Aid Kit

How many times have you needed ibuprofen or a bandaid when you’re traveling? Travel first aid kits can come to the rescue in more ways than one. Make your own from things you have around the house, or order one online

Pro Tip: Always carry prescription medications in your carry-on bag in case the airline loses your checked luggage.

9. Ziploc Bags

I always carry at least one quart and one gallon-sized Ziploc bag. They’re great for everything from trash to keeping leftover food. I’ve given out more Ziploc bags to passengers over the years than I can count! They’ve also come in handy during my trip. Hotels don’t stock them and vacation rentals rarely do.

10. Zip Ties

Zip ties are the MacGyver of travel essentials. Use one if a zipper breaks on your bag. Use them to organize cords and wires. You can also use them to hang your tablet on the back of the seat in front of you.

11. Snacks

Another thing I always have in my carry-on bag is snacks. Liquids might pose a problem at security, so try to keep to dry items. Some airports require you to place all your food items through security, so dry items would work best.

I pack a bag of crackers, hard candy, chocolates, or other small snacks that travel well. I personally like to carry powdered peanut butter. Just add water and it makes a spread I can put on my crackers. I prefer PB2, which comes in little packets and be found at Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Amazon, and Target. But if you don’t want to mess with mixing, stores also sell small squeeze packs of peanut butter. At 1.15 ounces each, they come in under TSA’s 3.4-ounce limit.

12. Water Bottle

I also bring a S’well water bottle to fill up once I’ve passed through security. My friend who worked there gave me one as a gift and I love it because it keeps cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. I even have a S’well wine tumbler with a closeable lid. I put my in-flight beverage in it so I don’t have to worry about my drink spilling.

13. Drink Mix

Airport beverages are not cheap. Pack your choice of powdered drink mix — Kool-Aid, tea, protein mix, etc., — for an inexpensive alternative to just water. Don’t forget to pack your blender springs for easy mixing!

14. Plastic Utensils And Placemat

For eating and on the go, I pack a set of disposable or reusable cutlery and a straw. I also use a silicone placemat to cover my tray table while I eat. This helps to keep items from sliding around.

Bonus: What Kind Of Bag I Use For My Carry-On

My bag of choice is the Travelpro backpack. This bag is affordable, has a great warranty, and is very large on the inside. Samsonite also offers some great laptop backpack styles. Mammoth backpacks pull double duty if you will need a cooler on your trip. The Tourit backpack is a more affordable version.

Happy travels!
