Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 review – Full-Suspension – Mountain Bikes

Canyon’s previous-generation Torque was one of a dying breed of long-travel 650b-wheeled bikes.

It’s been reworked substantially this year, with new frame details, revised geometry and bigger 29in wheels at each end.

Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 frame and suspension

Canyon relies on its familiar four-bar suspension design on the new Torque.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

In common with other new Canyons, the Torque’s low-slung frame has good standover clearance, rocks some pretty slick lines and is better finished than ever.

Out back, there’s the tried-and-tested four-bar suspension design we’ve come to expect from the German brand, plus a SRAM universal derailleur hanger, which will be easier to replace if you damage it hucking off cliffs away from home.

The new Torque is also available in carbon fibre, with adjustable geometry (via a flip chip at the tip of the seatstays, which isn’t on the alloy version) and 29in, 650b or mixed (MX) wheel sizes.

Cables are routed into the chunky aluminium frame.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

This, however, is the seriously robust-looking aluminium chassis, with big, beaded welds on the compact front triangle.

The old shock yoke is gone, with the air-sprung Fox Float X2 damper now attaching directly to the seatstay tip, and the smooth-edged rocker link wrapping around the curved seat tube to meet the stays further down.

There’s (finally) room for a water bottle on the curvy down tube. The pivot hardware uses steel inserts for durability, but the frame is still said to be 200g lighter than the previous generation.

Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 geometry

Geometry is pretty standard for a bike of this type, with the effective seat tube angle 78 degrees.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

This aluminium Torque lacks the geometry-adjust feature found on the carbon version.

Instead, Canyon has split the difference, giving the AL version the head angle from the slack setting (63.5 degrees) and the effective seat tube angle of the steeper setting (78 degrees) as found on the carbon frame, along with the 30mm bottom bracket (BB) drop.

These angles are pretty normal for a ‘bike park’ machine nowadays, and Canyon has stretched the latest Torque’s (carbon and aluminium frames) sizing so it’s in line with many contemporaries.

The large frame tested here has a 485mm reach (the key indicator of distance from hands to feet). While this sounds roomy, it’s actually 5mm shorter than the reach on the carbon 29er and doesn’t leave the frame feeling massive.

This is something to be aware of, because loads of rival mountain bikes with marginally shorter claimed reaches on paper feel bigger than this.

Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 specifications

Fizik’s Gravita Alpaca X5 sits on an own-brand dropper post.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

It’ll be no surprise to hear that Canyon has nailed the component choices.

As one of the biggest brands, it’s at the front of the line for the best parts in times of supply issues, and by selling direct to the customer and delivering in a cardboard box, its prices are roughly 25 per cent better value than shop-bought rivals.

Highlights include stiff and strong DT Swiss freeride FR 2070 wheels with 30mm-wide (internal) FR 560 rims that are hard to dent and damage. These are shod with arguably the best Maxxis tyre combination – a 3C MaxxGrip-compound Assegai up front and faster-rolling MaxxTerra Minion DHR II at the rear, with EXO+ and DD casings, respectively.

The choice of Maxxis front and rear tyres is spot-on.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

The trade-off for the strong wheels is more weight to lug uphill, and the workhorse drivetrain and brakes weigh marginally more than pricier kit, too.

However, Shimano’s SLX kit is perfectly sorted and reliable, providing wide-range gearing to winch up the steeps and powerful enough four-piston calipers and Ice-Tech brake pads that really bite on fast descents.

While the Performance-level Fox 38 fork and Float X2 shock have reduced adjustment and a slightly less refined ride quality than the brand’s priciest Elite and Factory kit, you can still add low-speed rebound and compression damping at both ends, via countable-click dials and a sweeping compression knob on top of the oversized fork leg.

Canyon’s own bar, stem and dropper seatpost are well-finished, a sensible shape and function well, plus the bike comes with a bottle cage installed to save you some money.

Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 ride impressions.

Climbing performance

This is not a bike designed primarily for climbing.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

With a frame construction rated ‘Cat 5’ by Canyon, the Torque shares the same bombproof build quality as the Sender DH rig raced at World Cups, which gives you a clue as to the major intentions here. Basically, this thing isn’t designed to win any climbing competitions.

That said, it pedals fine, with minimal bob (no matter which sprocket you’re in on the cassette), smooth turnover and a good seated position, which places your hips over the cranks and never tips your weight too far back, even on the steepest pitches.

Being built like a DH tank, the limiting factor to climbing speed is the Torque AL’s weight. At over 16.5kg, it’s a noticeable chunk of bike to lug uphill for extended periods.

Add to this the designed-to-last wheels being heavy and the sticky/grippy front tyre being painfully slow-rolling on tarmac and smooth fireroads, and climbing can be a bit of a drag. Don’t expect to get anywhere particularly fast uphill or over undulating ground.

This is all typical for the category, although there are a few bikes – such as Propain’s Spindrift – that defy expectations of how sprightly and frisky a super-long-travel enduro mountain bike can pedal and climb. Those bikes are way faster under power and quicker to accelerate than the new Torque.

Descending performance

Point the Torque 29 AL 6 downhill and it really comes into its own.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

With 29in wheels and 170mm of travel, you’d expect Canyon’s rig to thrive downhill with minimal drama and maximum speed, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Pretty much nothing unsettles the wheels on the ground or scrubs the edge off its pace, and the suspension at both ends feels deep and fluid enough to iron out creases on seriously rocky and rooty terrain.

The large size has stacks of stability and a calm ride. It trucks on down everything from raw, loamy enduro tracks littered with natural obstructions and blown-out holes, to faster baked-hard, big-bermed DH or bike-park style terrain.

The suspension is well tuned and not so numbing or isolating that you can’t get a sense of the terrain under the wheels, but if you want to turn off your brain, stand tall, look ahead and let the Torque do its thing, you’ll fire out the exit of tracks of practically any steepness and severity unfazed.

One area where this 29er seriously differs from its predecessor (and, to an extent, from the MX CF Torque) is that it’s definitely not as manoeuvrable or as responsive to sudden inputs of body language – for example, when initiating a lean angle to cut through turns.

It also feels as though the suspension sweet spot keeps your centre of gravity marginally higher than on the old 650b-wheeled Torque.

Both these factors mean it sits marginally higher through turns and flat corners, and it isn’t as easy to load the chassis in the mid-stroke to switch direction, pump hollows or bounce back off the rear end for extra acceleration in the apex of turns.

Smooth arcs, rather than acute angles, are the way to maintain speed, then, and the whole bike feels soft, forgiving and smooth rather than taut and springy.

Testing the latest carbon Torque earlier in the year, the frame felt absolutely bombproof, but transmitted a lot of terrain feedback through hands and feet. This isn’t the case here.

This may be a consequence of the alloy frame being better-damped, the bigger rear wheel, or the different shock and fork feeling slightly less supportive – it’s hard to say.

The Fox Float X2 damper now attaches directly to the seatstay tip.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

What is clear, though, is that there’s less of the harshness and sense of a slightly fatiguing, rattly, vibration-laden ride apparent on the beefier carbon chassis.

Instead, the AL rides silently, even through the roughest sections and with puncture-defying higher tyre pressures, despite its lower-tier suspension.

This might make it the better latest-generation Torque to take somewhere such as the Alps or your local bike park for non-stop, hand-wrecking, arm pump-inducing uplift laps.

How does the Canyon Torque 29 AL 6 compare to rivals?

Canyon is right on the money with the new Torque when it comes to pricing and spec.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

As a 650b-wheeled bike-park rig, Canyon’s previous-generation Torque had a unique, distinct set of attributes that saw it rule on jumps and man-made features, fizzing over with energy and tautness.

This new model is totally sorted, but being smooth and composed, rather than super-agile, it fails to transcend the crowded marketplace of similarly capable long-travel enduro rigs.

It’s still a sorted package, though, and you can’t argue with the price or spec here.

It’s unlike two long-travel chameleons in this category that balance super-enduro capability with a taut, responsive ride quality; Propain’s Spindrift and the Evil Wreckoning – the German bike blending high-speed enduro smoothness with corner-slicing attitude, and the latter popping and hopping off every trail feature more like the previous-generation Torque.

Canyon Torque 29 Al 6 bottom line

Solid is very much the defining word for the Torque 29 AL 6.
Mick Kirkman / Our Media

A solid package in every sense of the word, Canyon’s Torque AL 6 has got your back in the gnarliest terrain, pedals well and has great kit.

It’s a tad heavy and doesn’t quite have the taut, responsive attitude of the MX CF version, though, or that bike’s ability to encourage flicking off every little rise, lip and berm.

Notes

As Oct. 31 approaches this weekend, Happy Halloween from the Herald Democrat outdoors staff!… Ducks Unlimited, working in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), will construct approximately 206 acres of new wetlands within the Richland Creek Wildlife Management Area. According to a TPWD news release, water from the Trinity River will flood the wetland complex during the winter to provide habitat for a variety of bird species and the associated recreational benefits. After the winter, water from the wetland units would be released back to the Trinity River. The wetlands are designed to reduce sediment, nitrogen, and phosphorous levels in the water, providing valuable treatment and improved water quality for the Trinity River. The project is also anticipated to have more than 200 million gallons of water replenishment benefits annually. “The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department is excited to be working alongside Ducks Unlimited and the Texas Water Action Collaborative on this important project,” said John Silovsky, Wildlife Division Director at TPWD. “Ducks Unlimited is a long-standing partner that has provided direct assistance to TPWD to construct approximately 1,350 acres of wetland habitat on Richland Creek WMA since 1987.  Texan by Nature through the Texas Water Action Collaborative has taken the lead to protect and enhance water resources in the Trinity River Basin and connect TPWD  with corporate sponsors that recognize the importance of supporting water and wetland conservation.”…Did you know? According to TPWD, Richland Creek WMA is managed by the agency and is adjacent to Richland Chambers Reservoir, which was built by the Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) in the 1980s to help meet the growing water supply needs of the Dallas-Fort Worth region. A TPWD news release indicates that the WMA was created to mitigate wildlife habitat loss resulting from the construction of the reservoir…Since its creation, TPWD has worked closely with TRWD to develop an extensive wetland treatment system on the WMA that currently covers over 2,000 acres and helps treat raw Trinity River Water before it enters the reservoir and gets delivered to municipal and industrial water users. This highly successful collaboration is the model for the new project that will provide similar benefits to fish and wildlife and water quality in the Trinity River…Did you know? TPWD notes that the Lone Star State’s population of 29 million people is expected to double by 2050, putting pressure on the state’s land, water, wildlife, and infrastructure. As the 10th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.9 trillion, TPWD says that new water opportunities and conservation actions are needed to maintain economic leadership… TPWD says that Ray Roberts Lake State Park will be reopening the Highway 380 access point to the Greenbelt Unit as of Wednesday this week. This will reopen about four miles of multi-use trail and allow for hiking, biking, and equestrian access. The kayak launch and designated equestrian trailhead at the highway 380 access point will remain closed until further notice. “We are excited to be able to reopen this portion of the Greenbelt unit to visitors in time for them to enjoy the cool fall weather on the trail,” said Robbie Merritt, Superintendent of Ray Roberts Lake State Park. According to TPWD, this portion of the Greenbelt Unit has been closed since 2015 due to significant flooding along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. These periodic floods, caused by several large log jams in the river channel, have caused damage to large sections of the multi-use trail, the equestrian trail and the parking area at the Highway 380 access point over the years.  In addition, the log jams have closed off approximately 2.5 miles of paddling trail along the river channel. The agency says that it has made several attempts to repair the trails and the Highway 380 access to their original condition over the years.  Each of these attempts were disrupted by subsequent flooding events causing the area to remain closed. “In the future, TPWD plans to perform the basic clean up necessary after each flooding event in order to reopen the Highway 380 access as soon as possible, providing a  primitive trail experience for hikers, bicyclists, and equestrian riders along the multi-use trail,” said Merritt, in the news release. The agency says that state park staff are currently working with TPWD’s partners with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the Greenbelt Alliance, and the City of Denton to develop a more long-term solution to the flooding issues at the park…

Hunting Reports

The 2021 muzzleloader season continues in Oklahoma this weekend, ending at sundown on Halloween. With cool temps over the weekend and the approaching rut, this is a good weekend to be out with a smokepole in the Sooner State… As archery hunting continues on both sides of the Red River, whitetail action is picking up in the Red River Valley with a good bow buck being reported in recent days from northern Fannin County. In southern Oklahoma, North Texas Outfitters owner and lead guide Dakota Stowers and his wife Summer both took excellent archery bucks on back-to-back days this week near Waurika, Okla.…Quail season opens up in Texas this weekend for its Oct. 30-Feb. 27. With fair hunting out west and good hunting down south—at least that’s the expectation—scenting conditions should be decent for pointing dogs in the state’s best areas this year. Expect good opening weekend action with some cooler weather and lighter winds, particularly down in South Texas where a good season is forthcoming…As first split waterfowl seasons approach in North Texas and southern Oklahoma, bigger ducks are beginning to slowly filter through the area with the passage of each cold front… The first split of dove season ends on Sunday, Oct. 31 in Oklahoma. The second split runs from Dec. 1-29 in the Sooner State. In Texas, the first split for the North Zone runs through Nov. 12 while the second split is slated to run from Dec. 17 until Jan. 2. While many hunters have moved on from dove hunting as deer, duck, and other hunting seasons arrive this fall, there are a decent number of mourning doves filtering into the area with the passage of each front. The key is scouting to find these limited pockets of birds, particularly around native food sources…

Fishing Reports

At Lake Texoma, water is lightly stained; water temps are 75 degrees; and the lake is 1.58 feet low. TPWD says that stripers have moved up to shallow water, with an early topwater bite occurring and then a swimbait bite later in the day. Seagulls continue to guide the way to schooling stripers on the lake, while some bigger stripers are also being caught on topwaters and in 20 to 60-feet of water over windblown points. Meanwhile, for Texoma crappie, anglers are finding good action on minnows and jigs fished near boathouses, timber near a channel, and over brush piles…On the Oklahoma side of the two-state reservoir, ODWC says that striped bass are good on Flukes, live shad, soft plastic baits, slabs, and topwater lures fished below Denison Dam as well as on main lake points. Stripers are also being caught on live shad and topwater lures right now, particularly near Washita Point, Platter Flats and the islands…At Lake Ray Roberts, site of the 51st Bassmaster Classic this past June, water is lightly stained; water temp is 76 degrees; and the lake is 0.67 feet low. TPWD says that white bass are moving quickly in 20-28-feet of water on main lake points and are biting on one-ounce silver and chartreuse slabs. Anglers are finding better luck on smaller slabs because the smaller size is most similar to the size of baitfish that the sand bass are feeding on right now. Sandies are moving quickly, so the bite is best on the bottom using Alabama-jigs in 30-35 feet, letting the bait hit bottom and slowly reeling up, particularly as the wind blows. Largemouths are good on jigs and crappie are good on main lake brush piles sitting in 20-30 foot depths as anglers use minnows. The biggest slab crappie are coming in the Buck Creek area in standing timber around 20-foot depths as anglers fish with their bait suspended in the 10-12 feet of water…At Lake Fork, water is lightly stained; water temp is 66 degrees; and the lake is 2.14 feet low. TPWD says that fishing is slow, but the shallow bite is the ticket right now. Bass are good for anglers using Chatterbaits early in the day in 1-3-feet of water. After the early bite tapers off, transition to squarebill crankbaits like an Xcite XB 1 in 3-5 feet of water. Shakyheads are also good in submerged timber in 3-6 feet of water, especially when a Lake Fork Tackle Baby ring fry is in use. The crappie bite at Fork is heating up as November approaches, as slabs are moving into creek channels and suspending at depths of 12-26-feet of water. Best crappie baits at Fork are minnows and jigs…At the Blue River near Tishomingo, the river elevation is normal, the water is clear, and the water temp is 66 degrees as the wintertime trout season continues to approach. For now, ODWC reports that largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass are good on crankbaits, spinnerbaits and topwater lures fished around brushy structure, channel braids, and rocks…At McGee Creek in Oklahoma, the lake elevation is below normal, the water temperature is 72 degrees, and the water is lightly stained to clear. ODWC says that largemouth bass and spotted bass are good on crankbaits, jigs, and topwater lures fished around coves, points, and submerged rocks…On the Upper Texas Gulf Coast at the Bolivar Peninsula, TPWD reports that the fall fishing has been great this past week. Many reports of bull redfish, flounder, redfish, and jackfish are coming in and most catches are coming on live finger mullet, fresh cut bait, or squid. As with other areas of the coast, TPWD urges anglers to get in their final flounder fix over the next few days since the catching season closes from Nov. 1 until Dec. 14…On the Middle Coast at West Matagorda Bay, the shrimp migration continues, and TPWD says that the fishing is good. Follow the bird activity for schooling fish. Drifting or wade fishing for redfish and flounder is also good for those using artificial lures or live shrimp. Also, wade fish the drains for flounder prior to the Nov. 1-Dec. 14 closure…On the Middle Coast at Port O’Connor, TPWD says that a few 5-20 pound tarpon continue to be caught using live croaker…On the Middle Coast at Rockport, TPWD says that redfish are good in the flooded grass biting finger mullet. Redfish and scattered trout have been caught along the jetties and in the surf on croaker and mullet freelined. Flounder are good near structure and docks for anglers who are dragging minnows along the bottom…On the Lower Coast at South Padre Island, a strong blue norther blew through at midweek and the expected cool nights through the weekend will play a role in angler success. Point of note, TPWD says that big schools of mostly oversized spawning redfish are heading for the Gulf right now. Redfish are strung out along the spoil banks to the north, on Gas Well Flats, and on the edge of the sand on the east side to the saucer. Trout are still hugging the edge of the Intracoastal Highway, but are mostly undersized…

Tip of the Week

TPWD reminds waterfowl hunters gearing up across the state in anticipation of opening day to know that they play a key role in helping contain and avoid the additional spread of invasive species like giant salvinia and zebra mussels from one water body to another. Because of that increasing and ongoing need, TPWD is urging waterfowl hunters to do their part by cleaning, draining, and drying their boats and equipment after a day in the duck blind. That includes decoys and other hunting gear, by the way, and those pieces of duck hunting gear should be cleaned, drained, and dried before anglers travel from lake to lake this upcoming season.

Vucevic scores 29, Bulls snap Celtics’ 6-game streak, 102-96

BOSTON (AP) — The Bulls have a difficult road to travel if they want to secure a spot in the playoffs.

But they feel like replicating their defensive effort from the past two games might be the thing that helps them get there.

Nikola Vucevic had 29 points and nine rebounds, and the Chicago held off the Boston Celtics 102-96 on Monday night.

Coby White added 19 points and seven assists to help the Bulls snap Boston’s season-high six-game winning streak. Chicago has won its last two since a five-game skid to nudge in front of Toronto for 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Both wins have come without guard Zach LaVine, who remained in the health and safety protocols for the third straight game.

“We’re in a fight for our lives,” said Bulls guard Garrett Temple. “Every detail, every play matters. Guys are playing really hard, and I like that.”

What coach Billy Donovan liked best is how his team is competing on the defensive end, holding each of its last two opponents under 100 points.

“We shot the ball really poorly in the first half. But of defense kept us in it,” Donovan said. “Once the ball started going in the basket, it was nice to see us maintain that defensive intensity, really the entire game.”

Boston led by 12 in second quarter but struggled to execute down the stretch and finished with 17 turnovers.

“It was pretty consistent, the turnovers,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “I go back to their length, their physicality. We tried to draw some fouls in there, but to their credit they played physical. They played solid.”

Jaylen Brown had 23 points. Jayson Tatum posted the first triple-double of his career with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. But he was just 3-of-17 from field.

“It was a tough night,” Tatum said.

The Celtics played without Kemba Walker (non-COVID-19-related illness), Marcus Smart (non-COVID-19-related illness), Evan Fournier (health and safety protocols) and Robert Williams (sore left knee).

The Bulls missed their first five shots of the game and fell into an early hole.

They got back in the game in the third quarter, closing the period a 24-10 run and taking a 74-66 lead to the fourth.

Boston didn’t go away, and Brown tied the game at 90 with a 3-pointer with 3:25 remaining.

But Chicago then pushed back in front 96-90, taking advantage of a pair of Celtics’ empty possessions.

Tremont Waters got Boston within 96-94 on a layup with 16.5 seconds left. The Celtics fouled and White pushed the lead back up to 98-94 with a pair of free throws.

Two free throws by Tatum but it to 98-96. But after White was fouled again, he calmly sank two more free throws.

Boston shot 20-of-39 from the field in the opening 24 minutes and led 48-42 lead at halftime.

Vucevic scored 17 in the first half to keep the Bulls within striking distance.

White said it was easy to run the offense through the All-Star once he got going.

“Vooch is a bucket getter,” White said. “You gotta play off a guy that talented.”
