Marietta woman killed in traffic accident | News, Sports, Jobs

MARIETTA — A Marietta woman was killed in a traffic accident Friday in Washington County, the Marietta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Jean R. Pekach, 92, of Marietta, was killed in a collision with a 2010 Mazda 3 driven by Jimella J. Bigley, 51, of Ravenswood on Ohio 7 near milepost 27 in Marietta Township, the patrol said.

The investigation found Pekach, driving a 2001 Honda Accord, was attempting to pull out of a private drive when the collision occurred. Bigley was traveling north on Route 7, the patrol said.

Pekach was taken to Marietta Memorial Hospital by the Reno Volunteer Fire Department EMS where she was pronounced dead, the patrol said. Bigley sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and also was taken to Marietta Memorial by the Fearing Township Volunteer Fire Department EMS, the patrol said.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to the patrol.

Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash and both drivers were wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said. The accident remains under investigation, the patrol said.

Responding agencies include the patrol, Fearing and Reno fire departments and Westfall Towing.

Camping trailer accident causes backup on I-15

DRAPER, Utah — A camping trailer being hauled by an SUV on northbound I-15 rolled onto its side near Draper Sunday afternoon.

A Utah Highway Patrol spokesperson said the crash resulted in only minor injuries.

READ: Motorcyclist dies after crash on I-15 near Centerville

The trailer and vehicle blocked multiple lanes, causing a “bottleneck”-like traffic backup between Draper and Lehi.

The scene was cleared shortly before 6 p.m., and the traffic flow was back to normal by around 6:20.

After the initial crash, which was reported shortly before 3 p.m., four additional crashes on northbound I-15 occurred within just a few miles south of the accident scene, likely in the backed-up traffic:

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins dies at age 24 in traffic accident

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins died Saturday following a traffic accident in West Palm Beach, Florida. Haskins was 24-years-old.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin shared news of the tragedy in a statement Saturday.

“I am devastated and at a loss for words with the unfortunate passing of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin said. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family upon his arrival in Pittsburgh and was one of our hardest workers, both on the field and in our community.”

Haskins was involved in a “fatal vehicle vs pedestrian crash” early Saturday morning at around 6:30 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol in West Palm Beach.

The football player was walking on “a limited access facility for unknown reasons” as he tried to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic, Lt. Indiana Miranda told NBC News in an email. That’s when he collided with an oncoming dump truck.

Haskins was pronounced dead on scene, Miranda said, adding that the incident remains an open traffic homicide investigation.

“Dwayne was a great teammate, but even more so a tremendous friend to so many. I am truly heartbroken,” Tomlin said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Kalabrya, and his entire family during this difficult time.”

Haskins, who was turning 25 next month, is a former star quarterback from Ohio State University.

Even though he started for just one season, Haskins became one of the best players in college football after setting Big Ten records and finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting in 2018.

In a tribute posted on Twitter, Ohio State remembered Haskins as a “Leader. Legend. Forever a Buckeye.”

His Buckeye teammate Joe Burrow, who is now a quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, also shared a tribute on social media saying, “Tough to find the words… you will be missed.”

In 2019, Haskins joined the National Football League as a first-round draft pick for the Washington Commanders, where he spent two seasons.

“I am absolutely heartbroken to hear the news of the passing of Dwayne Haskins Jr. Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him,” Washington Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.

“I know I speak for the rest of our team in saying he will be sorely missed,” Rivera said. “Our entire team is sending our heartfelt condolences and thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family at this time.”

The NFL also extended its “deepest condolences” to Haskins’ family and loved ones.

Haskins joined the Steelers last year, but never got on the field with the team during the regular season. Haskins was in Florida this week getting in offseason work with several other Steelers skill position players.

Steelers teammate TJ Watt mourned Haskins’ passing on Twitter saying, “The world lost a great person today.

“When Dwayne first walked into the locker room I could tell he was an upbeat guy,” Watt said. “He was always making people smile, never taking life for granted. His impact on me will last a forever.”

Shuttle buses to replace trains between Pickering and Guildwood GO stations due to accident investigation

GO Transit users on the Lakeshore East line will be experiencing travel delays this week as labour officials investigate an accident along the train tracks in Pickering that left a contract worker dead.

Metrolinx said it is planning to use a combination of trains and buses to run a half-hour service to all Lakeshore East line stations starting on Monday. GO trains will run between Union and Guildwood stations and between Pickering and Oshawa stations.

Metrolinx said shuttle buses will be used to transport customers between Guildwood and Pickering GO stations. The agency warned that travel times for those using stations between Oshawa and Rouge Hill and travelling to Union Station will face delays of about 30 minutes.

“Our teams have been working around the clock to sort of figure out how we can ensure that our GO train customers who use the Lakeshore East line can really get to where they’re going this week, understanding that it’s going to probably take longer than it usually does for those customers to get where they’re going,” Metrolinx spokesperson Matt Llewellyn told CP24 Sunday afternoon.

“What we can guarantee at this point is that we will be servicing all stations with by one mode, whether that’s by train or bus.”

Llewellyn said the Ministry of Labour has taken control of the scene and the site will be shut down “until potentially Thursday.”

Customers are being advised to plan their travel and give themselves extra time. Metrolinx said there will be additional staff in stations to guide customers.

The ministry is investigating after a contract worker was killed when he became pinned under a freight car full of gravel along the tracks east of Rouge Hill GO station.

Rail accident

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Emergency crews attempted life-saving measures, but the worker was pronounced dead.

It is unknown what caused the rail car to tip over.

The train corridor was shut down this weekend for track signal work and rehabilitation work.

“Because it is under investigation by the Ministry of Labour, not too much more we can say at this point, in terms of the circumstances. What we can say is that obviously, this was an absolute tragedy,” Llewellyn said.

“For us, it was devastating to hear. Our first concern as an organization is always about the safety of everyone who works on the railroad. And so, this was absolutely heartbreaking to hear.”
