With such a hectic schedule, six of the eight Premier League players elected to miss both Players Championship events in Wigan this week, Michael Smith and Joe Cullen the two to feature.

It certainly won’t have done Bully Boy’s confidence any harm at all, he produced his best darts of the season as everything clicked into place for the St Helens man and he won back-to-back titles in Wigan.

With an average just shy of a ton on day one, noticeably keeping still on his last dart, his finishing was sublime and he performed consistently over the course of his seven matches.

There was not a single weak display from the 31-year-old en route to his first title of 2022.

He followed that up by producing a nine dart leg, a 115 match average and a second victory of the week in Players Championship 15 with 32 180s along the way.

You can back over 6.5 match 180s between Smith and Clayton at 11/10.

It was the most clinical we’ve seen him at the back end of legs for a while and he is 5/6 to average +97.5 in his opening match on Thursday against Jonny Clayton.

His opponent has been the player of the campaign so far and last week again showed why he is the man to beat in this competition, brushing aside James Wade in the quarter-final, remarkably the Welshman has lost his first round match just three times in 13 weeks.

The Ferret is of course favourite but if Smith can reproduce this week’s floor form in Sheffield, he has every chance of winning this one. Bully Boy is 5/4 to beat the Welshman and book his place in the semi-final.

MvG inconsistent but still achieving

Michael van Gerwen is consistently inconsistent at the moment. His finishing left a lot to be desired in his opening match in Glasgow, snatching at quite a few darts at the outer ring, he finished the match with an astonishing 23 missed at double but eventually he managed to get over the line.

It’s a regular occurrence for MvG these days who was, at times, at his sublime best en route to back-to-back Euro Tour titles, but also looked incredibly vulnerable and unsettled in-between.

I expect him to score more heavily and get the better of his struggling opponent Peter Wright this week and am backing MvG most 180s and win at 17/10.

Explaining her hack in a TikTok video that has gone viral, with over 260,000 views, Chelsea says that the other vital ploy is to book a window and an aisle seat, leaving the middle seat free.

The theory is that passengers are less likely to book a seat in between two strangers.

A travel expert named Chelsea Dickenson, who goes by @cheapholidayexpert, revealed her favorite hack that allows you to bring more onboard without checking in a bag.

She said her hack is “lower risk” than the one she’s seen on TikTok where users stuff clothes in a large pillow that they carry with them on board.

Although that trick is a good one, you never know if the flight attendant will make you leave behind the pillow you’re holding.

Instead, Chelsea turned to her neck pillow, which you typically wear as you board.

The idea came to her when she noticed the zipper on the neck pillow and decided to open it up.

“There’s the memory foam—goodbye sunshine!” she said while tossing out the fluffy insert.

She proceeded to stuff the neck pillow with a few pairs of bras and underwear, a pair of tights, a beanie, leggings, and a t shirt.

“So much room honestly!”

She zipped it shut and then placed it around her neck like she always would.

In a follow-up video, she revealed that her hack did indeed work.

CITRIS Researchers Lay Groundwork to Bring Flying Buses to California Skies


The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded a team of researchers from the University of California campuses at Merced, Berkeley and Davis a two-year grant to simulate urban air mobility in the San Francisco area, and to draft regulations for this highly complex form of travel.

The guidelines and best practices the team creates could help get advanced air mobility — featuring flying buses, air taxis and drone deliveries — off the ground around the state.

Raja Sengupta, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Berkeley who specializes in systems and transportation engineering and directs the CalUnmanned Research Lab, is the project’s lead principal investigator (PI). Brandon Stark, director of the University of California Center of Excellence on Unmanned Aircraft System Safety and assistant adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at UC Merced, is a co-lead PI, along with UC Berkeley researchers Mark Hansen and Susan Shaheen, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Alexandre Bayen and Claire Tomlin, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Seongkyu Lee, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UC Davis.

Each member of the multicampus, multidisciplinary collaboration also contributes to the CITRIS Aviation working group, an effort led by the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society and the Banatao Institute (CITRIS) that convenes faculty and staff researchers from UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Merced and UC Santa Cruz to integrate and enhance expertise in technologies, applications and policies related to vehicles for flight.

The working group is part of the CITRIS Aviation research initiative, which launched in fall 2021.

“The systemwide drone use policy hub is at Merced, and UC Davis has good aviation and noise modeling capabilities,” Sengupta said. “We’re trying to build a statewide enterprise, and the UC is a natural fit for that role.”

Moving people and packages in new ways and spaces

Advanced air mobility (AAM) describes a system of air transportation that moves people and goods in modes and environments previously underserved by traditional aviation. For many, AAM brings to mind headlines about companies using drones to drop packages on people’s doorsteps, but the field involves a wide array of transit niches and emerging technologies, with applications in passenger mobility, freight delivery and emergency response.

AAM requires the creation of new air corridors, or mapped pathways through which vehicles can safely travel. The establishment and regulation of these corridors requires careful planning, especially in areas that already have busy skies and crowded streets.

The Caltrans project focuses on urban air mobility (UAM), which involves flight traffic in densely populated areas and often includes passenger travel, and also addresses flights that move cargo too large to be carried by drones.

Sengupta and team are approaching the project from both quantitative and qualitative angles. The first track, led by Bayen, concentrates on the digital tools needed to create an accurate simulation of UAM, including potential air corridors, safety issues and environmental impacts. While the skies of the Bay Area will serve as their case study, the tool set will be suitable for use across the state of California — and beyond.

The second track, led by Shaheen, aims to better understand the needs of key stakeholders, such as government agencies, regulators and corporations, and will produce briefs and manuals for stakeholders intending to implement AAM in their regions.

Assessing noise and safety concerns

The aircraft used for AAM will vary by cargo and travel requirements, but they are generally expected to be hybrid or electric vehicles that generate fewer emissions than traditional airplanes. Multirotor systems will likely proliferate due to their vertical take-off and landing capabilities, as well as their overall versatility.

“Many people compare the UAM noise of rotating propellers to a helicopter,” Lee said. “Helicopters are so loud that they can’t fly in urban areas. Urban air mobility will be quieter because urban aircraft blades will be shorter, and noise is proportional to tip speed.

“However, air taxis will have multiple air rotors. They will also fly at lower altitudes than helicopters do. As a result, noise pollution may still be an issue.”

Lee will use UCD-QuietFly, software that he developed to predict noise pollution, to create a “noise map.” This assessment will account for the number of aircraft in the area, the heights of nearby buildings and the amount of noise generated by each aircraft, to give policymakers an idea how AAM noise will compare to ground traffic.

The dangers associated with AAM extend beyond noise pollution, however, and include risks to passengers, the public, and people who maintain equipment and facilities. As ​​director of the UC Center of Excellence on Unmanned Aircraft System Safety, Stark is an expert on aircraft safety, particularly the autonomous or semi-autonomous uncrewed vehicle systems, aka UASs or drones, that are likely to constitute the bulk of AAM fleets.

Using existing research from NASA, the international Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS) and other agencies, Stark will identify key metrics and analytic tools to provide meaningful safety data for future policymakers.

“This simulation will be useful to make good policy decisions,” Stark said. “We have to understand what advanced air mobility means for our community so that we can give this information to local governments.”

Laying strong groundwork

The researchers intend to incorporate stakeholder input from beginning to end. Shaheen, co-director of the UC Berkeley Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) and a pioneer in future mobility strategies, will lead the effort to conduct expert interviews to determine the information that planning and policy staff, regulators, and agencies will need to enable AAM.

“The goal is to foster shared understanding of roles and responsibilities and develop best practices for the development and approval of AAM corridors,” Shaheen said.

This track of research will also include group discussions with stakeholders, workshops to review the simulation’s progress and the production of policy briefs for stakeholders to use for their AAM implementations.

While the team will lay a strong qualitative and quantitative foundation for the adoption of advanced air mobility adoption in California, they do not expect to address every concern related to such a complex topic.

“There are energy issues, charging issues, environmental issues,” Sengupta said. “But our project doesn’t have to solve these problems. We must instead innovate the processes and tools the planners will use to solve them.”

Central America struggles to bring back international visitors


The wooden platform surrounding the temple can hold up to 20 people, allowing them to catch a view of the sunset over the nearby lagoon. But on that day, there were no more than 10 tourists, a tour guide and the park keeper.

Countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Belize were popular with adventure travelers before the pandemic hit. Adrenaline-filled activities such as climbing the Mayan ruins, year-round surfing, diving and exploring the jungle attracted millions of visitors from all over the world. But even as travel resumed in 2021, Central America has struggled to bring back international tourists.

In the first nine months of 2021, combined data from the local tourist authorities for Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and El Salvador show that international tourist arrivals across these four countries were about 35 percent of what they were in 2019.

The sector is still lagging, and while there were signs of recovery in October and November in some countries, the omicron variant is another obstacle on the way back to growth.

Danny Callaghan, chief executive of the Latin American Travel Association (LATA), a U.K.-based group that promotes travel in the region, said that between surges in 2021, travelers were booking and inquiring about Central America.

“But there are challenges … as well as lack of clarity around crossing borders,” he said. “Consumers are extremely wary of the possibility of conditions for return being imposed, with the onerous costs that often apply.”

Because of that hesitancy, hospitality businesses and tourism companies are having to reinvent themselves.

Isaac Herrera, 42, an independent tour guide based in El Salvador, has shifted to offering only small private tours. He works in Metapán, an area filled with waterfalls and hiking trails.

“It has been much better because this way people feel safer,” he says. “I don’t mix groups. Instead, I work with people who already know each other, like friends or families.”

But the private tour route does not always guarantee success in this time of crisis, said Jesús Yat, 61. He works as a tour guide in Petén in Northern Guatemala, commonly known as the “Heart of the Mayan World” for its archaeological ruins. Yat gives tours around landmarks such as Tikal — a UNESCO World Heritage site — and Yaxhá.

“There are weeks where I do not find any clients requesting my services,” he says. “For now, the majority of visitors are locals, and they have visited the sites two or three times already, so they do not require my services.”

In Flores, Guatemala, the four-star Isla de Flores hotel has relied on locals to help weather the pandemic and only recently began receiving international guests — a major shift from their usual business.

“Before the pandemic, we only received international tourists,” says hotel manager Carla Rodríguez, 32. “But after, we started working only with locals, and for that, we had to lower our rates. Until this summer, we had only Guatemalan tourists. Since then, it has been picking up. It is about 50-50 now.”

There have been very few people coming into Guatemala from abroad. In October, there were 50,154 foreign visitors, less than a third during the same month in 2019, according to the latest data from INGUAT, the national tourism institute. While this was a slight improvement on the previous month — arrivals in September were down 76 percent vs. 2019 — there’s still a long way to go. In October, 29 percent of foreign visitors came from the United States.

Ana María Díaz, 34-year-old nonprofit worker, and her father, Ron Goldberg, 75, from North Carolina, flew into Guatemala in October to volunteer at an archaeological dig in Tikal. They felt comfortable visiting Guatemala only after getting vaccinated.

“I studied archaeology and one of my good friends is the director of the Tikal project,” Díaz said. “It was one of those bucket-list items. I wanted to come last year but we couldn’t because of the pandemic. But we couldn’t wait too long because it always becomes harder and harder to take time off. This was the best time; it’s near the start of the digging season.”

In the neighboring country of Belize, the story is similar. The full reopening of seaports and land borders, initially scheduled for the end of 2021, has now been pushed back to February because of the omicron surge. Tourists flying into Belize can enter with a negative test result and have a certified accommodation.

Tour operator Tukán Travel Belize launched in 2019, just before the pandemic. The company invested thousands of dollars in equipment and was able to pay it off in a few months while business was good, says assistant manager Celine Neal, 27.

They have managed to survive and are hopeful for a better year in 2022. Even with the spread of omicron, they have experienced in recent weeks an increase in last-minute bookings and scheduled tours for this year.

“Tourism in Belize has not fully recovered, but with the borders officially open in 2022, more tourists will be allowed to visit, and it will make it much easier for travelers,” Neal says.

The tourism Central America had in 2021 from outside the region consisted of mostly North American visitors. As European border openings and requirements fluctuated in 2021, visitors saw Central America as an alternative. As international travel picks up this year, it is essential that tourists from other parts of the world comes back to Central America, Callaghan says.

“We have really pretty locations,” says Efraín Zacarías, the manager of Raíces del Lago, a restaurant in Flores, Guatemala. “I want to say to international tourists not to be scared, because we have all the protocols in place.”

Marine veterans travel to Ukraine to rescue civilians, bring medical aid and supplies

While Ukrainians flee the country amid Russia’s onslaught, many U.S. military veterans are flocking to the region to help.

Former Marine sniper and Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer and Marine veteran Chad Robichaux boarded a plane to Ukraine to help evacuate American citizens and civilians. Armed with only the medical aid and supplies they arranged, Meyer and Robichaux set out to save those “on the side of good,” they told Fox News.

“We’re just trying to make a difference where we fit and supply medical aid and supplies,” Meyer told “Jesse Watters Primetime” on Monday,” “as well as helping get good people out, Americans, people on the side of good.”

While some U.S. veterans volunteered to join the Ukrainian resistance in a position of combat, Meyer and Robichaux said they are focussed on using their experience as special operations veterans to evacuate Americans and those wounded by Russian forces.

“I know a lot of veterans talking about going in in combatant roles,” Robichaux, a co-founder of Save Our Allies, said. “For us, we are mostly special operation veterans. We have a tremendous amount of experience. We have done our time fighting. We’re here to do the right thing and help people that need help, evacuate Americans, evacuate wounded people. Bring medical aid to the frontline. Just support the effort and stand on the right side of this terrible, terrible thing.”

Robichaux’s group, Save Our Allies, safely rescued 17,000 American citizens and SIV Afghans from Afghanistan when the Taliban seized control, he told Watters.

“We didn’t engage in any combat there. Even though…we don’t like the Taliban. But we stayed out of trouble there and [we will do] the same thing here. We are just here to help,” he said.

With that said, Meyer and Robichaux acknowledged the complexity of the situation.

“You know, it’s not like Iraq and Afghanistan,” Meyer said. “I mean, this is two sovereign nations who are fighting against each other. You know tit-for-tat. This is a complex situation. And so the intel aspect of this and making sure you are doing this right is not only going to keep you and your team safe but even more importantly it’s going to help you keep the people we are trying to help be safe. As well as be able to do this, you know, long term. And that’s kind of what we’re doing.
