Citizen tip leads to tearful reunion between stolen dog and traveling nurse

A 6-year-old Australian shepherd and the nurse from Florida who owns her are back together Tuesday.

Mason Gray’s tan 1970s camper with her dog Bexley inside it was stolen over the weekend from the 4400 block of Sunset Drive, near Hoover Street, in Los Feliz.

‘”I’m emotionally exhausted. It’s been a roller coaster but I’m so happy to have her back,” said Gray, who works at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and traveled with Bexley in the camper from Florida, when she learned Bexley had been found.

Surveillance footage showed a black truck driving away with the camper on Sunday.

Police located the camper in South Los Angeles on Sunday and arrested one person who was with the camper, but they don’t believe the person was responsible for the theft, CBS 2 reported.

Bexley  and Gray shared a tearful reunion at the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77th Street Community Police Station late Monday night.

Some civilians have been evacuated from the Azovstal steel works in Mariupol after a ceasefire was introduced, according to a commander in the Azov Regiment, one of the Ukrainian soldiers trapped at the plant.

Capt. Svyatoslav Palamar, the deputy commander of the Azov Regiment, said the ceasefire, which was supposed to begin at 6 a.m. local time, ended up starting at 11 a.m. local time.

“As of now, it’s the truth, both sides follow the ceasefire regime,” he said.

The evacuation convoy was very delayed, he said. “Since 6 a.m., we’ve been waiting for the evacuation convoy to arrive, which only arrived at 6:25 p.m.”

“We have brought 20 civilians to the agreed meeting point, whom we’ve managed to rescue from under the rubble. These are women and children. We hope these people will go the agreed destination, which is Zaporizhzhia, the territory controlled by Ukraine,” Palamar said.

“As of now, the rescue operation is ongoing, conducted by the servicemen of Azov – we rescue the civilians from under the rubble,” he added.

“These are women, children and the elderly,” he said in a video message on the regiment’s Telegram channel.

“We hope that this process will be further extended and we will successfully evacuate all civilians,” he said.

“As for the wounded — those people who require urgent medical care — it is unclear to us why they are not being evacuated and their evacuation to the territory controlled by Ukraine is not being discussed,” he added.
“I emphasize that we ask to guarantee the evacuation not just for civilians but also for our wounded servicemen who require medical care.”

TASS, Russia’s state news agency, said earlier Saturday that a group of civilians left the steel plant. A correspondent on the scene told TASS that a total of 25 people came out, including six children under the age of 14. CNN cannot independently verify the TASS reporting.

There are thought to be hundreds of people inside the steel complex, including dozens injured during an intense Russian bombardment over the past several weeks. The latest satellite images of the plant show that many of its buildings have been reduced to ruins.

The defenders of the Azovstal plant said that attacks on Wednesday night had hit the makeshift hospital inside the complex, greatly adding to the number of injured.

Here’s what a part of the plant looked like approximately six weeks ago:

Gen-Z Leads Comeback of Travel Planning, Spending in 2022

Car-sharing company Avail recently released the results of a new study, which examined the current sentiment and behavior of travel consumers by generation.

For ‘The State of Travel in 2022’, Avail surveyed 2,000 Americans—Baby Boomers, Gen-X, Millennials and Gen-Z would-be travelers, in equal number—to discover how a pandemic and two years’ worth of travel restrictions have affected their desire to travel. Below, we’ve outlined some of the study’s key findings.

Trending Now

Travel technology, man with airplane and laptop

Increased travel spending:

— Gen-Zers are leading the charge in terms of returning to travel, and plan to spend more on travel in 2022 than any other generation with 72 percent saying they intend to spend more, or at least the same amount, this year than in pre-pandemic times.

— 72 percent of Gen-Zers are either already planning or are considering splurging on a really big trip in 2022, followed by Millennials (68 percent), Gen-Xers (60 percent) and Baby Boomers (51 percent).

Increased travel planning:

— The younger generations emerged as the most eager to travel more often than they used to, with 71 percent of Gen-Zers and 71 percent of Millennials saying they’re making plans to travel more, or the same amount, in 2022 than they did in the pre-COVID-19 era.

— Altogether, 69 percent of Americans across the generations are planning to travel more, or the same amount, this year as before the pandemic hit.

— 60 percent of respondents said they traveled less during COVID-19 than they did prior to the pandemic.

— 82 percent of Baby Boomers, 75% of Gen-Xers, and 73 percent of both Gen-Zers and Millennials plan on taking between one and five leisure trips within the coming year.

— As more of them retire and have open schedules, it makes sense that Baby Boomers were shown to be the most spontaneous travelers among the four generational groups, with 64 percent saying they can see themselves booking a month, or even less, in advance of their trips.

Factors affecting comfort levels:

— When combining the generations, 76 percent of all Americans said they agree that the widespread availability of COVID-19 vaccines has strengthened their degree of comfort about traveling, with Millennials (77 percent) and Baby Boomers (77 percent) being the most reassured because of vaccines.

— Only a minority (31 percent) of Americans said that COVID-19 concerns could dissuade them from traveling for leisure purposes this year, with Baby Boomers (27 percent) and Gen-Xers (28 percent) proving to be the least frightened by COVID-19 issues.

— 69 percent of all respondents said that Russia’s current war being waged on Ukraine could prove to be a major reason why they avoid international travel in 2022. The breakdown of those who foresee the Russo-Ukrainian conflict impacting their plans was 63 percent of Gen-Xers, 70 percent of Gen-Zers, 71 percent of Baby Boomers and 73 percent of Millennials.

Generational similarities:

— Participants across all generational groups agreed that staying within their budget is the most challenging element of travel planning.

— Seeing family and friends is the number-one motivating factor for taking a trip this year among Gen-Zers, Millennials, Gen-Xers and Baby Boomers alike.

money is the biggest limiting factor with regard to traveling for leisure in 2022 — more than two times more limiting than safety and health concerns.

— Americans continue to prefer car travel over all other modes of transportation, across all generations. But, all groups also agreed that car rental costs are “just too expensive”, prompting them to consider new services, such as car-sharing.

With high gas prices, summer travel for 2022 leads to expensive decisions

(CNN) — The high cost of fuel is making summer vacations more expensive — and staycations more appealing.

But the travel industry says the extra premium is not deterring Americans from booking trips, especially after the coronavirus pandemic complicated travel for the past two summers.

US airlines report that high demand is allowing them to raise airfares and offset the extra fuel costs. But trend watchers say average airfare is still down from pre-pandemic levels.

Average gas prices in the US dipped to $4.27 per gallon on Friday after setting a series of records and peaking on Monday at $4.33, according to AAA.

Sky-high prices

If filling up a car’s tank seems wildly expensive, imagine fueling up an airliner.

Some Boeing 737s carry nearly 6,900 gallons of fuel, which at recent prices reported by the US Energy Department would cost about $13,300 more than a year ago. Delta Air Lines said it expects to burn 750 million gallons of fuel in the first three months of this year alone.

Fuel is one of the largest expenses for airlines, and with the price per gallon for jet fuel at levels not seen since 2008, several US carriers are signaling they will pass the increase along to travelers.

Delta executives said at a conference this week organized by JP Morgan that passengers can expect fare increases “between 15 and 20 dollars each way,” which is about 10% of a $200 ticket. United Airlines and JetBlue Airways also indicated higher fuel costs will be baked into ticket prices.

Flight extras might cost more

Henry Harteveldt of Atmosphere Research said he expects fare increases to be “moderate” and “incremental,” noting airlines have other, less noticeable ways to increase prices.

“They can increase the prices they charge us for optional products,” he told CNN. “I don’t know that they will increase the fees for checked bags because that’s so polarizing, and they know it’s a bad PR move, but they may increase the amount they charge to reserve a seat on the plane, to get on the plane early, or go through priority security screening, for an airport lounge.”

Even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine drove the price of oil to new heights, airfares were climbing over last year’s levels.

The travel app Hopper said spring break fares averaged 21% higher than 2021 but 6% lower than pre-pandemic prices in 2019. And when factoring in inflation, Scott’s Cheap Flights says tickets are 23% less expensive than two years ago.

Thinking twice about that trip

If flights become too expensive, people may turn to a Plan B road trip. But it's costing a lot more to fill up that gas tank, too.

If flights become too expensive, people may turn to a Plan B road trip. But it’s costing a lot more to fill up that gas tank, too.

Lisa Roe

Experts say the cost of travel and other expenses mean travelers may rethink their plans.

“Everybody is going to be thinking about, gee, what are my travel options?” said Bill Eisele of the Texas A&M Transportation Institute. “How is this going to impact how and where and perhaps what I drive and the same with flights and increasing flight costs?”

Darius Doll of Cleveland told CNN he flies only a few times a year and said higher prices would “make a considerable change to the choice I made.”

He acknowledged that he understands airlines have higher costs, too, but that there’s a limit to what is tolerable.

“If it became unreasonable, I think people would forgo traveling — it would just depend on how much it would be and how bad you want to go somewhere,” he said.

Airlines think they haven’t found the ceiling yet.

United says demand is “unprecedented.” Delta calls it “really unparalleled.” And American Airlines says reservations set records three times last week.

“The bookings right now are incredibly strong,” American CEO Doug Parker said at the JP Morgan conference. “We have more people buying tickets, 15% higher, even though we have less inventory, even though we don’t have [as much] international travel, even though we have less business travel.”

“That just says demand for travel is really strong,” he said.

Trimming back flights and costs

Still, airlines are finding themselves trimming flight schedules to keep costs in check.

American had already planned to fly less than in 2019, but shaved more from its schedule than expected. Alaska Airlines cited “the sharp rise in fuel costs” when pruning its capacity. Budget carrier Allegiant said it would crop between 5% and 10% of its flights “instead of increasing fares.”

“That means if we usually fly a route five days a week, we may reduce it to four days,” Allegiant spokeswoman Sonya Padgett explained.

Some airlines are facing other issues, too. Southwest said it will cut flying 7% over the next three months because of staff shortages. Southwest executive Tammy Romo said at the JP Morgan conference that the company plans to hire 8,000 employees this year and is “in the process of getting properly staffed.”

Stuck in a bind

Higher costs for flying and driving and fewer seats in the skies may drive some vacations closer to home.

“I think this summer we could actually see a lot of people staying closer to home if these gas prices continue to increase at the rate they were,” Eisele of Texas A&M said. Some travelers may decide to “enjoy what my state has to offer perhaps within 100 or 200 mile radius.”

Some travelers say they’re stuck in a bind.

“Should I drive or should I fly?” wondered Deleah Sharp of Pontiac, Michigan. “Well, the gas is high and the tickets are high. So you know, I’m saying we’re definitely in a lose-lose situation.”

CNN’s Pete Muntean contributed to this report.

Jokic’s triple-double leads Nuggets past Warriors 131-124

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic had his second triple-double in as many nights with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists, leading the Denver Nuggets to a 131-124 win over the short-handed Golden State Warriors on Monday night.

Jokic has recorded triple-doubles in 11 of his last 23 games, and leads the league with 18 this season. The reigning NBA MVP was coming off a 46-point, 12-rebound and 11-assist game in a 138-130 win over New Orleans on Sunday.

Monte Morris and Jeff Green added 18 points apiece for the Nuggets, who have won 11 of 13 and moved to 13 games over .500 for the first time this season. “We did a good job today in sharing the ball and finishing, scoring-wise,” Jokic said. “We ran very well in transition. It’s always nice to have 30-plus assists (as a team).”

The Warriors were playing with a depleted lineup after coach Steve Kerr announced Saturday that Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins would miss the game to rest. Andre Iguodala and Gary Payton Jr. also were unavailable due to injuries.

Jordan Poole scored 32 points and Moses Moody 30 for the Warriors, who lost their fifth in a row and seventh in eight games. Golden State fell to 0-3 against the Nuggets this season.

Monday’s game was a makeup of a Dec. 30 game postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak that left the Nuggets without eight healthy players, the league mandated minimum to take the floor. But that resulted in the Warriors, who have another game in Denver on Thursday night, having to play at altitude twice in four days. Golden State has a Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Clippers in San Francisco.

“It puts us in a way tougher spot than them,” Kerr said prior to the game. “We had to fly here again. They didn’t have to make an extra trip. They’ve got to play a back-to-back, I know. This was just another in many, many games rescheduled around the league that are inconvenient for everybody, but necessary to keep the league going, so you just do what you have to do.”

The Nuggets also are enduring a scheduling crunch, playing four games in five days and facing the Warriors both times in the second game of back-to-back this week.

“Every coach has to do what is best for their team,” Nuggets coach Michaell Malone said, adding that he expects to see the Warriors full complement of players when they make the return trip to Denver.

Down 71-69 at halftime, the Warriors moved in front 83-77 on a 3-pointer by Poole. But the Nuggets outscored Golden State 27-18 over a 9 1/2 minute stretch to take a 104-101 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 3-pointer by Poole pulled the Warriors to 117-114 with 4:57 remaining, but Austin Rivers had a jumper and a breakaway dunk sandwiched around Kevon Looney’s dunk for five-point Denver advantage with 2:29 remaining.

Jokic converted a three-point play, hit a floater in the lane and made another free throw to help the Nuggets hang on for the win. “Really good experience for our young guys, to be thrust into a position where they had to take on different roles, different responsibilities, competed and had a chance,” Kerr said. “That’s all you could ask, give ourselves a chance in the last few minutes, we just couldn’t close.” MVP CONSIDERATION

Kerr said Jokic’s strong play this season is deserving of another MVP award. “I don’t have a vote, but Jokic is just an unbelievable player and was spectacular tonight,” the Warriors coach said. “He makes his teammates better, he makes defense so difficult because no matter what you do he’s got a counter for it.”

TIP-INS

Warriors: F Otto Porter Jr. was ruled out prior to the game because of non-COVID illness. “He’s just feeling sick and won’t play,” Kerr said. “He’s going to sit out and hopefully, he’ll feel better tomorrow.” … F Draymond Green, sidelined since early January with a back injury, is coming along well in his rehabilitation and progressing toward his return, though the Warriors would not put a timetable on it. “We’re optimistic,” Kerr said. “He’s had about a week, week and a half of being on the court almost every day, getting a lot of shots up, scrimmaging. He’s feeling a lot better and coming along, but still no target date.”

Nuggets: F Will Barton left Sunday night’s overtime win against New Orleans early because of a left ankle. “It’s not anything too serious, but just too sore to give it a go tonight,” coach Michael Malone said. … Jokic has 75 career triple doubles, three shy of tying Wilt Chamberlain for most by a center in NBA history.

Houston’s young trio leads Rockets to impressive victory over the Grizzlies

HOUSTON — After trailing by as many as 14 points midway through the first half, the Houston Rockets found their niche in the third quarter. Kevin Porter Jr. led the way for the Rockets with 19 points in the period, as Houston outscored the Memphis Grizzlies 40-30 during the third quarter.

Behind Porter’s scoring outburst, the Rockets took home a 123-112 victory over the Grizzlies on Sunday. With the win, the Rockets ended a 12-game losing streak en route to their second victory in 19 attempts inside the Toyota Center. Porter finished the night with a game-high 29 points connecting on eight out of his 17 shot attempts.

Following Porter’s third-quarter performance, Houston’s win over Memphis gave a glimpse into how special the Rockets’ young core can be in the future.

Christian Wood finished the night with 28 points and 13 rebounds — his 29th double-double of the season. Jalen Green — who came into the game averaging 21.7 points over his last three games — attributed 24 points in the win.

Despite recording a nine-point victory, Houston’s win over the third-best team in the western conference did not come easy. The Rockets’ gave up 72 points in the paint, as Houston’s inability to keep the Grizzlies from dominating from the inside resulted in Steven Adams scoring a season-high 23 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

In addition to Houston’s early struggles defending the paint against Memphis, turnovers played a significant role in the Rockets slow start. Houston committed 14 turnovers during the first half, which resulted in the Rockets trailing 62-52 at the half.

Desmond Bane led the way for the Grizzlies with 28 points shooting 11-for-22 on the night. MVP candidate Ja Morant finished the game with 22 points, shooting an inefficient 35 percent from the field.

After the win, the 16-48 Rockets will travel to South Beach for an interconference match against the 43-22 Miami Heat. Tip-off is set for 6 P.M. CT inside the FTX Arena.

Donic leads big comeback, Mavericks stun Warriors 107-101

SAN FRANCISCO – Outside the victorious Dallas locker room, coach Jason Kidd had a little fun with Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic.

“You almost had a triple-double,” Kidd joked, referring to Donic’s 34 points, 11 rebounds and nine turnovers.

The miscues didn’t matter at the end, when Donic and Dallas did almost everything right.

Doncic converted two free throws with 7.9 seconds left, leading the Mavericks back from 21 down in the third quarter to stun the Golden State Warriors 107-101 on Sunday night.

New addition Spencer Dinwiddie scored 10 of his 24 points in the final period for Dallas.

“We wanted to continue to have fight,” Dinwiddie said.

Stephen Curry hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining and had 27 points and 10 assists in his first game at home since earning All-Star Game MVP honors, but the Warriors couldn’t do enough on either end during crunch time as the Mavericks made all the big shots.

Doncic went 10 for 21 from the floor in the first of two matchups over five days between a pair of top-five NBA defenses: No. 1 Golden State and the fifth-ranked Mavericks. Dinwiddie scored five straight points midway through the fourth that got Dallas to 93-90.

Dorian Finney-Smith’s 3 with 5:05 to go made it 94-93, then his putback at 3:21 gave Dallas the lead before Donic scored the next time down.

Andrew Wiggins added 18 points for Golden State and Kevon Looney grabbed 10 rebounds to go with eight points and five assists as Klay Thompson sat out with an illness after missing practice Saturday. The hope is he will be healthy to travel with the team.

“I think we let our offense dictate our energy and our spirit in the game,” Looney said. “… We kind of folded when adversity hit.”

Warriors rookie Jonathan Kuminga received a technical with 9:20 left for grabbing the rim after a goaltending call. Golden State couldn’t deliver in what seemed set to be another commanding victory over Dallas after the Warriors snapped a four-game home losing streak to the Mavericks last month with a 130-92 rout.

Golden State has given away big leads in losing its last two home games after a 117-116 defeat to Denver on Feb. 16.

“I think it’s actually good to go through and feel it because this is what it feels like in the playoffs,” coach Steve Kerr said. “This is what it feels like when you’re playing a really good team, the game’s never over.”

Curry was presented another time with his All-Star Game MVP trophy so the home fans could celebrate the reigning scoring champion’s accomplishment: 16 3-pointers and 50 points. Vince Carter, who Curry admired while growing up in Toronto, handed him the hardware during a pregame ceremony.

The teams will meet again Thursday night in Dallas.

“Energy, effort, execution under pressure, that’s the name of the game,” Kerr said.
