ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan baseball team (24-20, 10-8 B1G) will wrap up a five-game home stand at Ray Fisher Stadium with a pair of midweek games against Xavier (May 10) and Wright State (May 11) before taking to the road for a three-game Big Ten series at the University of Maryland (May 13-15).

Tuesday’s home game against Xavier will feature Baseball Bingo for chances to win great Michigan Baseball prizes. Wednesday’s game against Wright State will serve as Dollar Day at the Stadium. Dollar discounts will include $1 general admission tickets as well as $1 hot dogs, fountain drinks, chips and bottled water.

Michigan currently sits in a tie with Penn State for fifth place in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines’ final two Big Ten series will pit U-M against the top two teams in the league: Maryland (12-5, second place) and Rutgers (16-4, first place).

The Week That Was

• Michigan dropped two out of three games to Indiana last weekend (May 6-8), winning the opener with a trio of late-game home runs before losing late leads on both Saturday and Sunday in an otherwise well-played series.

• On Friday (May 6), Jimmy Obertop clubbed an opposite-field two-run homer to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 Michigan lead in the seventh inning. Dylan Stanton followed with a solo shot to left-center, and Clark Elliott drove a two-run homer high over the scoreboard in right field as U-M ultimately doubled up Maryland, 8-4, in the opener.

• Michigan couldn’t keep momentum over the weekend as it surrendered late leads in the second and third games of the series. U-M held a 5-3 lead through six innings on Saturday (May 7) before allowing a three-run seventh and ninth and dropping the game, 9-5. Similarly, the Wolverines couldn’t hold an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning on Sunday (May 8) in a 10-8 setback.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

XAVIER

• The Musketeers, who already defeated U-M earlier this season in a midweek contest in March, enter play this week with a 25-23 overall record after sweeping Butler last weekend. The team has won four straight games and boasts four players with home runs in double figures, led by Luke Franzoni’s (.353 avg.) 20.

WRIGHT STATE

• Wright State also enters midweek play fresh off a weekend weep following three games against Youngstown State. The team sits at 23-21 overall and is on a six-game winning streak. Alec Sayre leads the offense with a .343 batting average, while Gehrig Anglin (.278 avg.) leads with 12 homers.

MARYLAND

• Maryland is currently 37-10 and has been ranked among the top-25 for much of the season. The Terrapins still have one game to play in their series against Big Ten-leading Rutgers on Monday (May 9). The teams split the first two games of a doubleheader on Sunday (May 8) with lopsided outcomes. Michigan defeated Maryland earlier in the season in a non-conference game played at East Carolina as U-M’s Joey Velazquez belted a pinch-hit three-run homer late in a well-played affair.

• The Terps’ potent offense is led by Troy Schreffler (.353 avg., 8-10 SB), Luke Shliger (.344 avg., 12-18 SB), Nick Lorusso (.335 avg., 9 HR), Chris Alleyne (.333 avg., 16 HR, 18-21 SB) and Kevin Keister (.318 avg.) while perennial all-conference talents Matt Shaw (.278 avg., 12 HR) and Maxwell Costes (.269 avg., 13 HR) remain ever dangerous on a team batting .301 combined.

• The pitching staff is also near the top of conference statistical leaders with Ryan Ramsey (9-0, 2.47 ERA) coming off a perfect game three weeks ago. Jason Savacool (7-2, 2.59 ERA) and ace Nick Dean (3-2, 4.12 ERA) also boast terrific command of their pitches.

STILL IN THE MIX: With just two regular season games remaining, the Morgan State Lady Bears enter the final week of the regular season sitting in a two-way tie for second-place with Norfolk State, both with identical 9-3 MEAC records. Howard, the preseason pick to win the regular season crown, is currently atop the league standings with a 10-2 record. Morgan State split the season series against both Howard and Norfolk State, winning at home and losing on the road against both teams. Morgan State will close out the regular season at Coppin State on Thursday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. Coppin State defeated Morgan State in the first meeting, 67-65 in the MEAC opener at Hill Field House (1/15).

MCCALLA MOVING UP SCORING CHART: Senior guard Ashia McCalla scored six points in Morgan State’s 69-63 overtime victory at Delaware State (2/27) to give her 1,047 career points and move her past former Lady Bear Tracy Lewis (1,039 points from 1989-93) for 15th all-time in scoring. McCalla is now 18 points away from passing Vinstel Watson (1,064 points from 1987-89) for 14th and 24 points away from passing Sherie Cornish (1,070 points from 1998-2002) for 12th on the scoring list.

DAVIS RETURNS TO THE HORNETS NEST: Morgan State head coach Ed. Davis Jr., will made his 6th trip back to Memorial Hall as an opposing head coach on Saturday, Feb. 26, when the Lady Bears traveled to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State. Davis, who once patrolled the sideline for 12 seasons as the head coach of Delaware State, is the winningest coach in Hornets’ program history. The Lady Bears got the win in overtime to improve to 12-4 all-time against DSU, since Davis joined the Morgan State staff as an assistant coach in 2012-13, and have now won seven of the last 10 meetings in Dover.

BLOCK PARTY: Senior Charlene Shepherd recorded a career- and game-high five blocks in the win over Norfolk State (2/21). A native of Killeen, Texas, Shepherd leads the Lady Bears this season with 20 blocked shots.

ADDISON PERFECT FROM THE FLOOR AGAIN: Taylor Addison connected on 7-of-7 shooting to finish with 16 points against Delaware State (2/16). A native of Columbia, Md., Addison knocked down two three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Her performance surpassed her season-best of 6-for-6 shooting, including 3-for-3 from three-point range for 18 points against Coppin State (1/15). In that game she was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and also knocked down all three of her free throw attempts. Addison also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, falling one board shy of recording a double-double.

MCCALLA JOINS 1,000 POINTS CLUB: Senior guard Ashia McCalla scored nine points in the win over South Carolina State (2/14) to become the 16th Lady Bears in program history to score 1,000 points. The Greenbelt, Md. native, who entered the game needing just nine points, hit a jumper with 4:31 remaining in the third period to give the Lady Bears a 48-32 advantage and give her exactly 1,000 points for her career. McCalla enters today’s contest having scored 1,041 points for her career, which ranks 15th all-time at Morgan State.

PROTECTING THE ‘HOUSE’: Morgan State improved to 8-1 at Hill Field House during the 2021-22 season, following its 51-48 victory over Norfolk State (2/21). With the win, Morgan State has now won 25 of its last 28 home games dating back to the 2018-19 season finale. The Lady Bears’ lone home loss this season was a 67-65 setback to Coppin State (1/15) in the MEAC opener. During last year’s abbreviated season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, MSU went 6-1 at Hill Field House. The season before that the Lady Bears concluded the 2019-20 campaign with a 10-1 home record, which was the program’s best home court mark since the 2017-18 team finished 10-3.

PICKPOCKETS: As a team, Morgan State has recorded 257 steals on the season through 23 games, which ranks No. 1 in the MEAC. Jayla Atmore leads the team with 40 steals, while Adia Brisker has 37 steals and Ashia McCalla has totaled 32 thefts. Atmore is averaging 1.9 steals per game, while Brisker is averaging 1.8 steals per game, which ranks fifth and sixth, respectively in the MEAC, while Taylor Addison (29 steals) is averaging 1.5 steals a game, which is 10th. McCalla, who is averaging 1.5 steals per outing ranks 13th.

TURNING UP THE PRESSURE: To date, Morgan State has forced 492 opponent turnovers (257 by way of steals), while collecting 11.7 steals per game, which ranks second in the MEAC. Morgan State forced an opponent season-high 40 turnovers out of Washington Adventist (11/24) and turned those turnovers into 40 points. 30 of the turnovers were by way of steals with Adia Brisker and Jayla Atmore leading the way with five steals apiece. The 40 turnovers surpassed the previous season high of 36 by Notre Dame of Maryland (11/19). The Lady Bears scored a season-high 48 points off Notre Dame.

HALFWAY THERE: Morgan State closed out the first half of the MEAC slate with a 5-2 record and sitting in fourth-place, following its victory over North Carolina Central (2/12). The Lady Bears are 4-1 during the second half, with their lone loss coming on the road at Howard (2/19).

THE MAIN EVENT: The Morgan State women’s team was featured in Game 2 of its MEAC doubleheader against North Carolina Central (2/12). It marked the second consecutive season that the women’s team twice followed the men’s game as part of a doubleheader. Earlier this second the Lady Bears and Bears played a non-traditional non-conference doubleheader on Dec. 6, 2021 with the men taking on Millersville and the women’s program following in the nightcap against Hofstra. Last season the Lady Bears opened the 2020-21 season as the main event in their season opening doubleheader against the University of Maryland Baltimore County (11/25/20). The men’s team opened the doubleheader playing first against Mount St. Mary’s. The Lady Bears were also the main event in their MEAC opener at Delaware State (1/4/20). That contest marked the first time in nearly three decades that the women’s team followed the men’s game in a MEAC doubleheader.

SEE YOU REAL SOON: The Lady Bears will play a home-and-home schedule against both North Carolina Central and South Carolina State within a week apart. Morgan State will travel to Durham, N.C. (Feb. 5) and Orangeburg, S.C. (Feb. 7) to face NCCU and SCSU, respectively, before welcoming the Eagles and Bulldogs a week later in Baltimore on Feb. 12 and Feb. 14.

HENSON SETS CAREER HIGH: Ja’Niah Henson connected on 6-of-9 shooting to finish with a career- and game-high 20 points on the road at Maryland Eastern Shore (1/31). The Baltimore, Md. native was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range and also knocked down all four of her free throw attempts. Henson also added three assists and two rebounds.

ADDISON PERFECT FROM THE FLOOR: Taylor Addison connected on 6-of-6 shooting to finish with 18 points against Coppin State (1/15). The Columbia, Md. native was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and also knocked down all three of her free throw attempts. Addison also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, falling one board shy of recording a double-double.

STREAKS COME TO AN END AT SIX: Morgan State’s loss to Coppin State (1/15) put an end to several active streaks involving the number six (6). Morgan State entered the MEAC season opening contest against Coppin State with a season-long six-game winning streak and had won six consecutive games against the Eagles. The Lady Bears were also sporting a six-game home court winning streak at Hill Field House, dating back to the 2020-21 season. All of that would come to an end, following a 67-65 victory by Coppin State.

38-DAY LAYOFF: Morgan State ended its longest in season hiatus between games in program history when it finally returned to the floor against Coppin State (1/15). It had been 38 days since the Lady Bears last played a game, a 64-55 victory at Loyola Maryland (12/8). Since that time, Morgan has had four games that were canceled or postponed due to Covid protocols either in the MSU or its opponent’s program.

POSTPONMENTS: Morgan State had its MEAC opener in Durham, N.C. against North Carolina Central (1/8) postponed due to Covid protocols within the Eagles’ program. The game will now be played on Feb. 5. The Lady Bears’ contest at South Carolina State (1/10) was also postponed because of Covid protocols in the Bulldogs’ program. That game is slated to be made up on Monday, Feb. 7 in Orangeburg, S.C. Morgan State’s home contest against Delaware State (1/29), which was postponed due to inclement weather, will now be played on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 5 .m. at Hill Field House.

WELCOME HOME: A familiar face joined the Morgan State sideline this season with the addition of Jamie Smith as an assistant coach. Smith, who is no stranger to Morgan State, was a three-year starter for the Lady Bears from 2010-13, after transferring from Saint Peter’s, following her freshman season. As a sophomore, she helped the Lady Bears advance to the first round of the WNIT against host Virginia, where she scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. It was Morgan State’s first-ever postseason appearance on the Division I level. Smith returns to Morgan State after spending a total of four seasons at Niagara University, the last three as an assistant coach and her first as the Director of Women’s Basketball Operations.

MSU SECURES NON-CONFERENCE WINNING RECORD: Morgan State secured its second straight non-conference winning record (6-4), following a 64-55 victory at Loyola Maryland (12/8). The Lady Bears’ final two originally scheduled games at Kentucky (12/17) and against Penn (12/30) were both cancelled due to Covid protocols. Last season Morgan State finished 3-1 in non-conference competition, to earn its first winning record against non-conference opponents since the 2017-18 campaign (7-6).

TAKE SIX: Morgan State upped its season-long winning streak to six games, following a 64-55 victory at Loyola Maryland (12/8). The win also gave the Lady Bears a 3-0 start in December, a month which since 2003, Morgan State has not won more than three games in.

A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER: Morgan State, which is having its best month of December in program history, enters the contest 3-0 in the month. Dating back to 2003, the three wins tie for the most victories in December matching the 2006 and 2017 teams, which each went 3-3 in the month. MSU has been off since a 64-55 victory at Loyola Maryland (12/8). The team’s road game at Kentucky (12/17) was postponed due to COVID issues within the Morgan program. In the win over Loyola, Dahnye Redd scored a team-high 15 points, Ashia McCalla added 14 and Charlene Shepherd came off the bench to add 10 points and a game-high six rebounds

MORGAN-LOYOLA MARYLAND RENEW SERIES: The Morgan State and Loyola women’s basketball programs renewed its series on Dec. 8 after a 35-year hiatus. The Lady Bears would win 64-55. It was the first meeting between the two schools separated by 2.7 miles, since the 1985-86 season. Morgan State now leads the all-time series, 12-2.

2022 MEAC TOURNAMENT: The 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s and women’s basketball tournament is scheduled for March 9-12, 2022 at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. The annual MEAC Basketball Tournament moved to Norfolk in 2013 after spending the previous four years in Winston-Salem, N.C. from 2009 through 2012.

Maryland men’s basketball travel to face struggling Nebraska on Friday | WDVM25 & DCW50

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WDVM) – The Maryland men’s basketball team are hoping to break their five-game losing streak with a win on Friday night as they travel to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Nebraska has only one win in their last 12 games as they hold the last spot in the Big Ten rankings. Maryland has not faired any better, just two places above the Cornhuskers.

Interim coach Danny Manning clarified that senior guard Eric Ayala will be a game-time decision, as he works back from an injury.

“Eric [Ayala] has been participating in practice, not all the practices,” Manning said about Ayala’s availability ahead of the Nebraska game. “Will be a game-time decision, we’ll see how he feels after today and tomorrow after shoot-around hopefully it doesn’t get banged around and we can get him back out there to give us some minutes.”

He would go on to say he’s been happy with his team’s effort in their last five games, especially against some of the better teams in the conference. But they just have to find a way to win.

“The type of effort that we play with at Purdue and these other games is what we need on a nightly basis.” said Manning, “And we gotta continue to take steps with the goal of playing our best basketball down the stretch going into the big ten tournament.”

The Terrapins will tip-off at 9 pm against the Cornhuskers on Friday night.

Maryland travel testing requirements explained | News

OAKLAND — The COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers from and to Maryland continues to be in effect.

This testing can be achieved through the Garrett County Health Department’s testing sites, which have been maintained throughout the pandemic.

The Executive Order requires all Marylanders who travel outside of Maryland and individuals who travel to Maryland to immediately get a COVID test upon arrival in Maryland, or within 72 hours before travel to Maryland.

Individuals are also strongly encouraged to get a second COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival in Maryland because of the virus’ incubation period.

“COVID-19 testing is important even if you have been fully vaccinated,” said Garrett County Health Officer Bob Stephens. “The existence of the new variants makes continued testing important. If a previously vaccinated person were to test positive for the virus, it is possible that a variant of the virus is the cause, and this would be something requiring further investigation.”

These testing requirements do not apply to travelers who pass through Maryland, with their final destination being another state. In addition, travel by Marylanders to the District of Columbia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia are exempt from this testing requirement.

Testing by the Garrett County Health Department is available at:

• MEDCO Building in the McHenry Business Park (46 Business Park Drive, Accident) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This testing is for anyone with or without symptoms, and a doctor’s order is not required. Preregistration is recommended to speed up the process on the testing day. Visit garretthealth.org for preregistration information.

• Garrett County Health Department’s office at 1025 Memorial Drive, Oakland, on Monday

through Friday from 8:30 a.m.–2 p.m. This testing is for people with or without symptoms, and an appointment is required. Call 301-334-7697 for an appointment.

Additional COVID-19 resources:

• For all other COVID-19 related questions, or to report a COVID-19 compliance issue, call the local COVID-19 Hotline number at 301-334-7698.

Starting Five: Badgers travel to Maryland

#9 Maryland

12-2, 8-1 B1G

Game Coverage

Thursday, Feb. 4 | 3 p.m. | XFINITY Center | College Park, Md.

MADISON, Wis – The Wisconsin women’s basketball team (4-11, 1-11 B1G) takes to the road for two games this weekend. The Badgers travel to No. 10 Maryland (12-2, 8-1) on Thursday for a 3 p.m. CT tip from XFINITY Center in College Park, Maryland. The game airs live on the Big Ten Network.

The Badgers continue their East Coast road trip on Sunday, taking on Penn State (6-7, 3-6). Wisconsin and the Nittany Lions tip off at 1 p.m. CT from Bryce Jordan Arena, and the game will be streamed on B1G Network+.

Here are five things to know before the game:

1. LEADING LIKE LEWIS: On the day that she was presented with a commemorative ball recognizing her 1,000 career points, junior Imani Lewis went off in against Illinois, scoring a season-high 22 points, just one off her career high, and pulling down 16 rebounds, tying her career best. Lewis has eight double-doubles this season, including the last five games in a row, which ties for the  Big Ten lead. The 6-foot-1 forward is averaging team bests of 18.2 ppg and 13.4 rpg over the stretch, shooting 45.8% (33-72) from the field and 75.8% (25-33) from the free-throw line.

2. DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE: It took a total team effort but Wisconsin finally won its first Big Ten game with a 69-57 win over Illinois on Sunday afternoon in the Kohl Center. The Badgers played one of their best defensive games of the season, holding Illinois to an opponent season-low 28.8% (19-66) from the field, while UW shot 40.3% (27-67). UW also outrebounded the Illini 50-40, UW’s highest single-game rebounding total since the first game of the season., Wisconsin looks to build on its defensive momentum and continue to play well-communicated, team defense as it did against the Illini.

3. LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin faced off against the Terrapins on Jan. 17 in Madison and while a strong outing fell just short, many positives came out of the loss that the Badgers will look to improve on during the rematch. Wisconsin saw big games from Sydney Hilliard, Julie Pospisilova and Lewis last time out against Maryland, all putting up double digits as the game served as being the first of Lewis’ double-double streak. Shooting the ball well from deep at a .333 (6-18) 3-point clip, the Badgers also shot well from the free-throw line at a season high .923 (12-13) percentage. Continuing to shoot the ball well and maintain defensive momentum will be important in outwitting a high-powered Maryland offense.

4. SCOUTING MARYLAND: Leading the way offensively for the Terrapins is guard Ashley Owusa, but it was forward Chloe Bibby who had her way against the Badgers in their last meeting, scoring 19 points. Forward Mimi Collins also took advantage of the Badger rebounding core, grabbing 17 boards in the seven-point loss on Jan. 17. On the defensive side of the ball for Wisconsin, limiting 3-point opportunities will be important as the Terrapins lead the Big Ten in 3-point field goals made and 3-point field goal percentage.

5. HOW TO WATCH: Tip-off is scheduled on Thursday for 3 p.m. CT at the XFINITY Center in College Park and fans can find the matchup on Big Ten Network or listen to the voice of the Badgers Jon Arias call the game on U-100.9 FM. See live updates and stats by following @BadgerWBB on Twitter.
