Western Mass. travelers share nightmare stories from recent trips

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) -Travelers are on the move for the holiday weekend. With Easter and Passover, along with the school vacation week ahead, many people are heading somewhere either by driving or flying. With travel headaches for many in recent weeks, especially at the airports, we’re hearing some nightmare stories.

We spoke with one man from West Springfield who told Western Mass News that his travel nightmare played out as he tried to come back home from vacation.

Anthony Boido lives in West Springfield. He told Western Mass News he booked a round trip flight to Lake Tahoe eight months ago, for himself, his wife and son but had to change switch his first flight a few weeks before takeoff.

“I had signed up for a class at STCC and I had an exam the morning we were leaving so I had to get a separate flight down from my wife and son,” explained Boido.

Boido told us he was planning to use his original round trip ticket to fly back home with his family, but, then this happened.

“When we were leaving Lake Tahoe a few days later, without any warning, e-mail, call, they canceled my flight back without telling me and so when I showed at the airport my son and wife had a flight back, I did not, there was only one seat left on the plane they had fully canceled my flight that I had already paid for and then charged me $1,966 for the only seat left was first-class to get home,” said Boido.

Boido said he had hoped to get a refund for that nearly $2,000 extra he paid to get home.

“They said because I didn’t come down on the flight they took it upon themselves to cancel the whole thing, but didn’t let me know…They wouldn’t work with me one bit through e-mail they said absolutely nothing we do basically screw you and that’s what’s happening,” said Boido.

We reached out to American Airlines for answers. They told us in a statement in part-quote:

“Customers need to use their tickets in sequence or any flights after a skipped flight will be cancelled. If the purchased ticket is Basic Economy which doesn’t allow any changes, a customer will need to purchase a brand new one-way ticket. For non-Basic Economy tickets, a change will still need to be made to exchange the round-trip ticket to one way by paying fare difference if any.”

We spoke with one local travel agent to find out why people have encountered this type of situation and why there has been an increase in delayed or canceled flights.

“Sometimes, the cheaper is not the better because the less supply the higher the demand and there’s shortages so when you go to another carrier that doesn’t have as many flights they have a pattern in it, you could be bumped and have nowhere to go from there so you have to wait until the next day to be available or the next after that or whatever day they got,” explained Doreen Coakley-Rodriguez, owner of Doreen’s Going Places Travel Services.

AAA told Western Mass News that travel is expected to hit 2019 levels again this weekend, so people hitting the roads or skies should plan ahead.

Gunfight Shut Down 405 Freeway, Stranding Drivers in Traffic Nightmare – NBC Los Angeles

A police investigation into a gunfight on the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass Thursday morning stranded drivers for hours who needed to get to work, LAX, school and more.

A red Ford Mustang on the side of the freeway and objects on lanes were what officers were focusing on as they canvassed a stretch of the freeway with cars lined up for miles at a standstill.

At a 12:40 p.m. news conference, hours after drivers had been stranded, CHP officer Jose Barrios provided an update, explaining how the shooting unfolded.

CHP said officers saw a red Mustang on the side of lanes with airbags deployed, and they saw a man outside of the car. When they approached, they saw the man reach into the car, pull out a gun and start firing. They returned fire, and struck the man.

Around 2:50 a.m., CHP reportedly shot a man, but CHP would not reveal any other details. Traffic was a mess in the area. Annette Arreola reports April 14, 2022.

CHP said no officers were hit, but the man was taken to the hospital. They did not have an update on his condition.

They also said there were no words exchanged before the gunfight, and that everything happened very fast.

When asked why it took so long to release information, CHP said because it was an officer involved shooting, they were not releasing details until investigators could do their jobs.

Lanes began opening up later into the afternoon on the 405 South.

By 1 p.m., all lanes had finally reopened.

The backup in the early morning hours was extensive on the 405 South at Skirball Center Drive. The backup extended all the way to the 118 Freeway.

All lanes were shut down, but the northbound side began to move slowly just before 5 a.m.

Southbound traffic was being diverted at Valley Vista.

Alternative Routes

Sepulveda is a possible alternative route, but it’s getting busier by the minute.

Other possible alternatives are the South 170, Laurel Canyon or Coldwater Canyon.

It wasn’t clear when the SigAlert would clear. Lanes were still shut down as of 9 a.m.

Los Angeles International Airport officials said FlyAway bus service that carries passengers from Van Nuys to the airport was being delayed by at least 90 minutes.

Charles Sanders, Below Deck nightmare guest, gives cheap tip

The crew of Parsifal III weren’t happy to see Erica Rose and Charles Sanders, Below Deck Sailing Yacht‘s memorably bratty season-two guests, when the couple returned for another high-maintenance charter this season. And they were even more perturbed when they were given a suspiciously light tip envelope at the end — not only one of the lowest on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 3 but in the entirety of Below Deck history.

Charles and Erica on Below Deck Sailing Yacht were already on the receiving end of fans’ disapproval with their incessant complaints about the food during the March 7 episode, and their inelegant behavior during the March 14 edition further stoked the flames.

Spain holidays cancelled: Industry’s ‘worst nightmare’ amid latest Covid wave | Travel News | Travel

“They have been frozen for a month, but this is due to the restrictions across Europe and not because we have any problems here.”

David Morales, president of Skal Tourism organisation in Gran Canaria said: “Sales have stalled, and there is no activity either via tour operators or travel agencies.”

Across the board and all over the country, the Spanish tourism sector was waiting for March, and hopefully an uptake in reservations for the summer, to help them.

Only ski resorts seemed unscathed, with Masella ski resort in Girona reporting almost 100 percent occupation in the area.

I-80 Reopens to Limited Traffic After Extended Snowy Sierra Road Travel Nightmare – CBS San Francisco

DONNER SUMMIT (CBS13/CBS SF) — State agencies have partially reopened Interstate 80 to both westbound and eastbound Tuesday evening after an extended shutdown due to a severe holiday snowstorm.

Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Caltrans said eastbound I-80 had been reopened to passenger vehicles and essential commercial vehicles only, while westbound traffic was still closed from the Nevada State Line to Colfax. Chain controls were in effect for eastbound I-80 travelers from 3.4 miles east of Gold Run to the Nevada State Line.

It wouldn’t be until after 9 p.m. that I-80 opened to westbound traffic, and then only for essential commercial trucks and vehicles, according to Caltrans.

On Tuesday afternoon, Caltrans tweeted that traffic on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe was at capacity and had essentially come to a standstill.

“If you don’t need to travel today, please don’t,” a Twitter post showing the traffic map for the area read. “Your best option for an alternate route is to stay put.”

The roadway was closed from 8.3 miles east of Placerville to Meyers, but fully reopened Monday night.

Highway 50 wasn’t without its problems on Tuesday. In the morning, it was also closed after a semi-truck jackknifed in the area Sand Flat and Meyers.

Just after noon on Tuesday, Caltrans announced Highway 50 had again reopened. Drivers should still expect serious residual delays for the time being, and chain controls remain in effect east of Placerville to Meyers.

Caltrans says falling trees remain a constant obstacle to reopening I-80.

Both freeways have seen closures since the weekend due to low visibility, heavy snow, downed power lines and downed trees across the roads.

Several parts of Highway 88 (from Dew Drop to 3.5 miles east of Silver Lake, 3.5 miles east of Silver Lake to Kirkwood, 2 miles east of Kirkwood to 5 miles west of Picketts Junction, and Picketts Junction to Woodfords) are also closed.

Highway 89 is also closed from Eagle Point Campground to Bliss State Park and from Sierraville to Sattley.

The challenging weather conditions were also slowing the search for 43-year-old Rory Angelotta, of Truckee, who has been missing ever since he was last seen Saturday morning at the Northstar ski resort.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, Angelotta was reported missing when he failed to show up for dinner Saturday night with friends. His car was found in the resort parking lot and his calls went straight to voicemail.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office responded and immediately dispatched additional emergency resources including Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Nevada County Search and Rescue and Northstar Ski Patrol on Sunday.

The investigation has revealed that around 11:30 a.m., Angelotta’s ski pass was scanned at the Comstock lift. There was no other activity registered to his pass since that time.

“Searchers responded and combed the mountain and surrounding areas, despite extreme weather,” the Placer County Sheriff’s Department said. “Rescue personnel were on skis, snowmobiles, and a snowcat during their search. They faced high avalanche danger, strong winds, whiteout flurries, frigid temperatures, and heavy snow loads before calling off their search in the evening.”

A travel nightmare is setting up from coast to coast as holiday travelers return home

Looks like the weather from coast to coast is putting on one last show for the final week of 2021. Ice and snow, rain and freezing temperatures will impact millions on their journey home.

The Pacific Northwest has already been blanketed with a post-Christmas layer of snow and bitter cold.

More snow is on the way for the region, with 1 to 3 inches possible at lower elevations this week — and more unseasonably cold temperatures to come.

The Sierra could again be measuring snow in feet, adding to an already impressive snowpack.

“The Sierra Nevada are expected to receive another 1 to 2 feet of snow with totals up to 3 feet possible in the highest elevations,” said the Weather Prediction Center.

While the snow is welcome in this drought-stricken region, it could make for dangerous conditions for the passes.

In Nevada, injuries were reported in a 20-car pileup that happened Sunday after snow and wind created whiteout conditions.

Even the Rockies will pick up 1 to 2 feet of snow. With the fresh snow and high winds, avalanches will be a huge concern. Avalanche warnings have been issues across portions of northern Colorado and Utah for backcountry skiers.

“Heavy dense snowfall and strong winds will likely create dangerous avalanche conditions. Both human-triggered and natural avalanches are likely. Stay off of and out from under slopes steeper than 30 degrees,” said the Utah Avalanche Center.

In Colorado, their first avalanche death of the season happened on Christmas Eve after a backcountry skier was “fully buried” by an avalanche.

Snow, ice and rain

In the East, snow is falling from the Dakotas to the Northeast and will continue through the day.

While most of the snow will be relatively light, it could pile up in some locations, especially in Minnesota.

“Totals over 6 inches are possible in the Minnesota Arrowhead,” said the WPC.

Blizzard conditions are possible for portions of North Dakota and Minnesota, making for extremely dangerous travel and whiteout conditions.

Winds gusting as high as 45 mph at times, causing snow drifts to pile as deep as 5 feet, according to the National Weather Service office in Bismarck, North Dakota.

A wintry mix across portions of upstate New York and Pennsylvania will also make for dangerous conditions on the roads.

Accumulation should remain less than a quarter of an inch, but slick spots will easily develop on roads and bridges.

After this system, another one will impact many of the same regions on Tuesday into Wednesday.

The next system will bring another round of snow for parts of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes.

Areas farther south will receive all rain. Most of the rain totals will stay under 2 inches. Some isolated locations could see more.

Contrasting temperatures from coast to coast

The coldest temperatures this week will be across the northern Plains, where many areas will struggle to get above zero.

Along with the cold will come strong winds, creating bitter wind chills.

“Blustery conditions will lead to dangerously cold wind chills ranging as low cold as -30 to -50 degrees, leading to the issuance of Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories,” said the WPC.

Bismarck is one of those places. The NWS office there issued this stark warning: “The cold wind chills as low as 25 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.”

Just outside of Seattle, temperatures Sunday morning were reported at just 10 degrees with a 50 mph wind, making for a dangerous wind chill of nearly 20 degrees below zero.

This is extremely unusual for this area, which normally has a high temperature in the mid 40s this time of year.

Temperatures for Seattle will likely stay below freezing until Thursday.

While the West will be dealing with the extreme cold, those in the Southeast will continue to need their shorts and flip flops.

Temperatures will range from over 20 degrees below average in the Northern Plains and West to over 20 degrees above average across the South this week.

On Christmas Day, record heat stretched from Texas to Virginia. Houston set a record at 84 degrees along with little Rock at 78, Nashville at 76 and Cincinnati at 69.

High temperatures for the South will remain 20 to 35 degrees above normal this week.

More than 250 record warm highs and lows could be broken Tuesday and Wednesday with high temperatures in the 70s and 80s from Texas to the Carolinas.

Early New Year’s Eve forecast

While New Year’s Eve is still pretty far out for a accurate forecast, models are hinting at yet another system impacting the Pacific Northwest.

By New Year’s Eve night it should be winding down, but more rain and snow could impact the region.

Rain could soak the Southwest as we ring in the New Year. From Southern California to Arizona, quite a bit of rain could fall on the holiday weekend.

More snow is forecast for the Rockies as well.

The eastern half of the country looks relatively quiet for New Year’s Eve, aside from a few showers in the Southeast and some snow for northern New England.

The temperature trend will be much as it is now, with warmer than normal temperatures across much of the East, and cooler temperatures in the West.

New York City could even be on the mild side as temperatures could hit 50 degrees on New Year’s Eve, with mainly dry conditions.

By New Year’s Day, all could change as we watch the potential for severe weather to set up across the Plains and the mid-South.

It’s still a little early to tell, but we could see the potential for strong to severe storms to impact the region on the first night of the new year.

Temperatures will also begin to fall again for the areas that have been enjoying warmer than normal weather.

The strong front that will bring rain and storms will also bring cooler weather for the start of 2022.
