ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women’s lacrosse team will play a pair of contests this weekend, starting with its Big Ten Conference opener Friday (March 18) at 2 p.m. at Johns Hopkins. The Wolverines will then conclude the weekend Sunday (March 20) with a non-conference noon game at Villanova.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan moved to No. 10 in the IL/IWLCA Coaches Poll this week after a loss to then-No. 11 Denver.
• Senior Kaitlyn Mead became the fifth Wolverine in Michigan history to reach 100 career draw controls. She had six against Denver (March 13) to bring her career total to 105.
• Freshman Julia Schwabe earned Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week honors after having two assists and a draw control against Denver last weekend.
• Fifth year senior Caitlin Muir broke the Michigan points record in the first week of the season and has 188 points (108 goals, 80 assists). Muir is also just the fourth player in Michigan women’s lacrosse history to score 100 career goals, joining Kim Coughlan, Jess Angerman and Anna Schueler after netting four goals against Arizona State (Feb. 18). In order to become the all-time leader in goals, Muir would need to score 16 goals in the 2022 season to pass Coughlan, who netted 124 career goals.
• Freshman Kaylee Dyer has made her presence known early and often in the 2022 season as she ranks second for the Wolverines with 20 points. Dyer has recorded 11 goals, which ranks fifth overall for Michigan, and nine assists, which ranks second behind Muir. The Elkins Park, Pa. native has had seven multi-point games this season with a career-best five points at Cincinnati (Feb. 20).

Michigan trails the all-time series 1-5
Michigan and Johns Hopkins played twice in the 2021 campaign with the Blue Jays taking both victories. The Wolverines will be looking for their first win over JHU since the 2019 campaign when they defeated the Blue Jays 16-11 at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Johns Hopkins comes into Big Ten play with a 4-3 overall record and all three of its losses coming to ranked opponents. The Blue Jays are averaging 28.1 shots per game and have a .736 shots-on-goal percentage. Georgia Esmond leads the JHU offense with 23 points (8 goals, 15 assists), while five total players have double-digit points this year. Kathleen Garvey has started all seven games in the cage, making 50 saves and carrying a 10.14 goals against average.
Villanova
Michigan trails the all-time series 0-1
U-M and Villanova met just once previously, with the Wildcats earning the 20-7 victory during the 2014 season.
Villanova is 2-6 overall with its most recent loss coming to No. 4 Maryland. The Wildcats are being outscored 102-78 and average 23.6 shots per game. Caroline Curnal has a team-high 16 goals, while Libby McKenna has 12 goals and Alex Tsahalis has 10. In the cage, Alexa Mora has started all eight games and has 79 saves and a 13.03 goals against average.
