NSP Troopers Promote Safe Travel For State Basketball Tournaments | KLIN

Lincoln will be busy over the next week with the NSAA Girls and Boys State Basketball Tournament.  March 7th through the 12th, Nebraska State Patrol Troopers will be patrolling the roads to make sure that everyone arrives safely.

“State basketball is a fantastic time for teams from around the state and this year’s tournament means twice the action in one week of time,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Since we’ll have more teams and fans traveling at the same time, let’s all do our part to keep the roads safe and keep the action on the court. Follow traffic safety laws, avoid distractions, drive sober, and wear your seat belt.”

There is a different schedule this year with both the Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament taking place during the same week. Troopers will perform high visibility patrols throughout the week. The effort will take place in Lincoln and other high traffic areas across the state.

This extra effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $15,635 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

Any motorists in need of assistance can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 and speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.

Division I Men’s Basketball Conference Tournaments 2022: Basic Info and What’s New

Tonight, the 8 vs. 9 game of a temporarily expanded NEC Tournament—the first of 302 single-elimination contests scheduled between Monday, February 28th and the start of the 2022 NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Sunday, March 13th—tips off what I hope will be the first “normal” Championship Fortnight since March 2019.

Of these 302 games, the overwhelming majority of them—191—will truly be “win or go home” affairs—part of one of the tournaments that will determine the representative for one of the 22 likely one-bid conferences. So, before I jump into the details of what’s changed in the world of conference tournaments since 2021, for those of you who are only interested in seeing teams clinch bids, I give you …

Even though the Division I ranks have swelled to 358 teams for 2021-22 (and more are on the way!), with just 302 conference tournament games scheduled, several teams have to sit this year’s postseason out. And there are still others who will participate without being eligible for the NCAA or NIT.

  • The America East (field of 8 out of 10 teams), Big 12 (9 of 10), Colonial Athletic (9 of 10) have each excluded one member due to some flavor of sanctions. While Oklahoma State will not play in Kansas City due to an NCAA postseason ban, both Stony Brook (America East) and James Madison (CAA) are de facto eliminated from the NCAA Tournament because they’ve been barred for competing for conference postseason honors due to pending realignment moves. The Horizon League was set to do the same to Missouri Valley-bound UIC, but reversed its decision. However, the eighth-seeded Flames must travel to ninth-seeded Milwaukee for their first-round game, as they gave up their rights to host conference championship events for the remainder of UIC’s Horizon League tenure.
  • The America East Playoffs only feature eight teams because the conference is one of a handful that limits participation based on the regular season standings. The other five conferences that play with a reduced field are the Ivy League (4 of 8), Mid-American (8 of 12), Ohio Valley (8 of 10), Southwestern Athletic (8 of 12), and Summit League (8 of 9 full Division I members).
  • The Conference USA Tournament will feature all 14 teams, not just 12, which means the event will start on Tuesday, March 8 in 2022.
  • The NEC also expanded its tournament to include all nine full Division I members for this year. However, transitional member Merrimack is ineligible until the 2023-24 season, so the Warriors will sit the postseason out. Three other teams find themselves in a similar position UC San Diego (Big West, eligible in 2024-25), St. Thomas (Summit, 2025-26), Dixie State, and Tarleton State (both WAC, both 2024-25).
  • On the other hand, a pair of ASUN members, Bellarmine (2024-25) and North Alabama (2023-24), along with WAC member Cal Baptist (2022-23) will participate in their respective conference tournaments despite being ineligible for either an NCAA or NIT bid. If the Lancers win the WAC title, the regular-season champion will get the automatic bid. If either ASUN team wins, the eligible team eliminated last qualifies (with the higher seed having priority if two or more teams are knocked out in the same round).

For starters, we are back to 32 conference tournaments this year, thanks to the return of the Ivy League after its absence for the 2020-21 season. Harvard’s Lavietes Pavilion will host the fourth edition of Ivy Madness—two years after originally scheduled to do so. Of course, the Crimson will not participate in the tournament (for the first time in the event’s short history), a fate sealed by a one-point home loss to Princeton on Sunday.

Elsewhere:

  • The Atlantic 10 returns to a neutral site after playing on campus in 2021, but with the ACC playing in the conference’s usual arena, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the A 10 will take over Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
  • The Big South also moved its tournament to a neutral site for 2022—Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. That’s the original Charlotte Coliseum downtown, not the arena where the Hornets play nearby or the now demolished second Charlotte Coliseum.
  • The Big Ten will play in Indianapolis this year, as the conference alternates between Gainbridge Fieldhouse and Chicago’s United Center.
  • The Big West plays in the Las Vegas area for the second straight year, but at the new arena in Henderson and not the Mandalay Bay as was the case in 2021.
  • The SEC heads to Tampa’s Amalie Arena for a single year before resuming its typical residency in Nashville.
  • The America East, ASUN, Northeast, and Patriot League Tournaments will be played exclusively on the home floors of the higher seeds. It’s the same story for the first two rounds of the Horizon League Tournament, which concludes at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.
  • The American Athletic, Big 12, Big East, Big Sky, Colonial Athletic, Conference USA, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley, Mountain West, Ohio Valley, Pac-12, Southern, Southland, Southwestern Athletic, Summit League, Sun Belt, West Coast, and Western Athletic will all play in the same site as in 2021. In most cases, that’s a longtime venue.
  • However, the WAC Tournament deserves an asterisk here. Thanks to its expanded field of 10 and a stepladder bracket format, it begins on Tuesday night with a pair of first-round games. There’s a slight problem; however, as the WAC’s usual venue, the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas is booked for that night’s WCC final. So, the WAC will open at the Mandalay Bay Arena before shifting to the Orleans from Wednesday through Saturday.

There aren’t too many changes to how you’ll actually watch 2022’s conference tournament lineup. It’s still a great time to subscribe to ESPN+ short-term if you cannot get enough early-round action. ESPN+ and ESPN3 added the MEAC to its formidable lineup of postseason elimination action, leaving just the CAA on subscription service FloSports.

Otherwise, since it’s an even-numbered year, Fox Sports takes the fourth Pac-12 quarterfinal, second semifinal, and championship game from ESPN. The first two games will air on FS1 in the late night Eastern Time window on the Thursday and Friday before Selection Sunday, while the title game will follow the Big East tilt on the Fox network on Saturday night.

As usual, Conference Tournament Central is your one-stop shop for scores, brackets, updated schedules, tip times, and TV info. You can also access each conference’s primer/results page from the 2022 Conference Tournaments Hub.

The boys tournament starts Tuesday with the first round, the semifinals will be Thursday and the championship will be Friday. The higher seed will host in both tournaments.

Pinecrest is the No. 2 seed in both tournaments. On the girls side, Pinecrest hosts Hoke County Monday at 6 p.m., with the winner taking on the winner of the Scotland and Southern Lee contest.

Pinecrest’s boys lost a coin flip and were seeded second behind Richmond. Pinecrest takes on Lee County in the first round at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner gets the winner between Hoke County and Southern Lee Thursday.

The Union Pines boys team is the No. 4 seed as well and opens at home against Scotland Tuesday at 6 p.m. The winner will travel to Richmond Thursday.

Because playoff seeding is based on the regular season, the conference tournament is used to break ties in the conference standings. High school basketball tournaments tip off amid COVID concerns

Sierra Canyon's Bronny James moves the ball up the court against Corona Centennial's Ramsey Huff.

It’s insanity week in high school basketball with tournaments and more tournaments. The only question is with surging coronavirus cases, can games go off as planned?

In Los Angeles County, the recommendation is to reduce seating capacity, so tournament title games won’t have full gyms. That doesn’t mean gyms won’t be loud. It will be important to wear a mask as a safety precaution for others, even if you like yelling at officials or coaches.

The fun and games begin Monday at La Verne Damien with the biggest and best basketball tournament. It will be four days and nights of great games. There are six divisions and 83 teams, down from 88 after five pulled out this last week, including Sacramento and Long Beach St. Anthony.

Damien coach Mike LeDuc has used his ties to many coaches and programs to attract top teams. The Platinum Division is loaded with quality first-round matchups. How about this matchup: defending Southern Section Open Division champion Corona Centennial playing defending City Section Open Division champion Lake Balboa Birmingham.

Two teams with top young players face off, Riverside Poly taking on Santa Clarita West Ranch. The other divisions also are packed with top teams and matchups, particularly the Gold Division, where unbeaten Rolling Hills Prep is seeded No. 1 but will face competition from Irvine Crean Lutheran, Capistrano Valley Christian and Ontario Colony.

Damien is off to a 14-0 start and delivered the 1,000th coaching victory for LeDuc last week. Only Gary McKnight of Santa Ana Mater Dei had reached that figure in California high school history.

This coming week will be a chance to take a look at Damien guard RJ Smith, a Colorado commit who continues to impress.

“He’s been doing a tremendous job,” LeDuc said. “What makes him so good is he does everything well. He can defend the point guard, defend the center. He can play point guard and be a center at the wing. He doesn’t have an area in his game he can’t do a great job in.”

KDOC plans to televise a game Wednesday, and Bally Sports will put on the web the Platinum championship game Thursday night. Here’s the link from CalHiSports that has all the tournaments taking place in the Southland. There are boys’ tournaments at South Pasadena, Newhall Hart, Rancho Mirage, Ventura, Gardena Grove Bolsa Grande and Torrey Pines.

Some teams decided to stay home during Christmas break. Studio City Harvard-Westlake was scheduled to travel to Rancho Mirage for a boys’ tournament and its girls’ team was headed to Northern California. Both canceled this week as a precaution as COVID cases increase.

The No. 1 girls’ tournament is the Gold Crown Holiday Tipoff at Bonita Vista High in Chula Vista. No. 1 Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda is in the tournament, but unbeaten Chatsworth Sierra Canyon pulled out because of COVID protocols. The SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego is a 40-team, five-site tournament. North Torrance also is hosting a tournament.

In boys’ soccer, there’s a terrific tournament that begins Tuesday at Chapman University. The SoCal College Showcase includes Anaheim Servite, Los Angeles Loyola, Los Angeles Cathedral, Orange Lutheran and Santa Fe Springs St. Paul.

Boys, girls tournaments tip-off season

One coach jokingly said he forgot where he’s supposed to stand during games and another says this season is going to be kind of like starting from scratch.

The high school basketball season is underway in Nevada and full speed ahead, mostly.

The 2020-21 winter high school sports, basketball and wrestling, were cancelled in Nevada, due to the pandemic.

And this season, some teams are not being allowed to travel outside of Washoe County, until COVID-19 testing procedures are clarified in some other counties.

But in the North 5A, boys and teams played last week and again on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, Bishop Manogue beat Carson (72-46), Spanish Springs beat Galena (71-50), Douglas beat Reno and Damonte Ranch got past McQueen (79-71).

“It’s pretty special being back on the court,” Damonte Ranch coach Brian Voyles said. “We’ve talked about not taking anything for granted.”

Reed has five players with varsity experience and coach Keegan Bosier said they are doing a good job providing leadership.

“It’s exciting to be back,” Bosier said. “The kids love it. You can tell they’re a little out of shape and they’re still working on some things. They haven’t played high school basketball in two years.”

He said most teams are unknowns, especially in these first few weeks of the season.

Spanish Springs is the defending North large-school champion, beating Reed in the final in Febuary 2020.

Bishop Manogue should be among the top contenders for the league title this season. Coach Bill Ballinger has height, only one player is under 6 feet tall, to go along with some experience, thanks to playing a club schedule over the summer and fall.

He said parity should be the rule in the nine-team North 5A league this season.

“There’s as much parity as I’ve ever seen,” Ballinger said.

After the Wild West Shootout, the Miners will travel to a high-caliber tournament in California.

“I always want to play the best I can possibly play,” Ballinger said.

Reno coach Matt Ochs said he told his staff he was nervous before the Huskies game last Saturday against Hug.

“I felt rusty. i wasn’t sure where to stand, or what to do,” Ochs joked.  “It’s such a blessing to be back.”

Reno has one player with significant varsity experience, Grayson Grinsell, and six sophomores.

“There are going to be games that are kind of chaotic,” Ochs said. “We told our parents that it’s going to be kind of a fun, crazy, wild ride. The good thing is they’re coachable and they play really hard.”

After league games Tuesday, most schools are playing in tournaments next week, then return to league play in mid-December.

League play will be 16 games, with each team facing the others twice, home and away.

The Wild West Shootout is Thursday-Saturday at Bishop Manogue and features some strong teams, including defending state champion Bishop Gorman.

Games Thursday are: 2 p.m,, Jesuit vs. Douglas; 3:45 p.m., Bishop Gorman vs. Folsom; 5:30 p.m., Foothill vs. Bishop Manogue and at 7:15 p.m., Spanish Springs vs. Vacaville.

Games continue Friday at 2 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. with winners bracket semifinals at 5:30 and 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, games are at 10 and 11:45 a.m. with the championship at 1:30 p.m. The consolation championship is set for 3:15 p.m.

The Wild West Shootout raises money for The Sierra Kids Foundation, an autism treatment program in Northern Nevada, and helps families and kids of all ages.

Gorman is playing for its 10th straight state championship this season.

Bishop Manogue coach Bill Ballinger expects his team to be among the contenders. The Miners club team played in several tournaments outside of Nevada over the summer and fall and gained valuable experience.

Girls basketball

Bishop Manogue rolled over Carson on Tuesday; Reno beat Douglas; Damonte Ranch beat McQueen and Galena beat Spanish Springs.

Damonte Ranch girls coach Erica Mckenzie said everything feels brand new about this season.

“We’ve been talking about it a lot in the program. It’s because we didn’t have a season in 2020-21,” she said. “We’re excited, we have a great group of kids.”

She has three players with varsity experience, all juniors.

Damonte Ranch plays in the Cardinal Newman tournament on Thursday, against Archbishop Mitty, which is coming off an 81-7 win over Santa Cruz.

In Washoe County, there are tournament games at Sparks, Reno and Spanish Springs this Thursday-Saturday.

The Brickhouse Classic at Sparks High School is Thursday-Saturday and teams include: Sparks; Hug; North Valleys; Excel Christian; Coral Academy of Science; Truckee;  White Pine and Moapa Valley.

At 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Truckee plays Coral Academy; at 4:45 p.m., Sparks plays White Pine; at 6:15 p.m. North Valleys plays Excel and at 7:45 p.m., Hug plays Moapa Valley.

On Thursday, at Reno, Galena plays Fernley (3 p.m.); Douglas plays Elko (4:30 p.m.); Carson plays Lassen (6 p.m.); and Reno plays Faith Lutheran (7:30 p.m.)

There are also games at Spanish Springs starting at 3 p.m. Thursday. McQueen plays Springs at 4:30 p.m., and Spanish Springs plays Spring Cree at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tournaments games continue Friday at both Reno and Spanish Springs, starting at 3 p.m.. On Saturday, at Reno, Carson plays Spring Creek at 9 a.m., Douglas plays Faith Lutheran at 10:30 a.m., Galena plays Elko at noon and Reno plays Lassen at 1:30 p.m.

Games also start at Spanish Springs at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Big schools set to tip district tournaments with girls games

District tournament action for the bigger class teams will get underway in full swing tonight.

Tonight’s games will feature girls action.

In the Class 6 District 9 Tournament, the Capital City Lady Cavaliers (3-22) will host the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Lady Tigers (1-17) in a 6 p.m. contest. The second-seeded Lady Cavaliers defeated the third-seeded Lady Tigers 57-43 in a Central Missouri Activities Conference contest last week in Sedalia.

Tonight’s winner advances to the district title game Thursday against top-seeded Jefferson City (19-2) at Fleming Fieldhouse. The title game in the three-team district is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

The District 9 champion will face the District 10 winner in the sectionals. Springfield Central is the No. 1 seed in District 10.

The Class 5 District 9 Tournament will play a pair of semifinal games tonight.

The third-seeded Helias Lady Crusaders (16-5) will travel to West Plains to take on the second-seeded Lady Zizzers (23-3). Game time is 5:30 p.m. at West Plains High School.

The other district game will see the top-seeded Rolla Lady Bulldogs (17-7) host the fourth-seeded Marshfield Lady Jays (19-5) at 6 p.m. Marshfield advanced with a 70-66 win Saturday against fifth-seeded Camdenton.

The top three seeds are all in the Class 5 rankings by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association. West Plains is ranked No. 2, while Helias is No. 5 and Rolla is No. 9.

Tonight’s semifinal winners will play Thursday night for the title. That game will start at 5:30 p.m. at the West Plains Civic Center.

The District 9 winner will take on the District 10 winner in the sectionals. Willard, ranked No. 3, is the No. 1 seed in District 10.

The Blair Oaks Lady Falcons are one of four teams starting play tonight in the six-team Class 4 District 9 Tournament.

Blair Oaks (13-10), the No 3 seed, will host sixth-seeded Cuba (3-16) at 6 p.m. The winner advances to Wednesday night’s semifinal at second-seeded St. James (19-5). Fourth-seeded Owensville (12-8) will host fifth-seeded Salem (14-9) in the other semifinal, with the winner slated to take on top-seeded and 10th-ranked Fatima (18-7) on Wednesday night in Westphalia.

The district title game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Owensville.

The District 9 winner will face the District 10 champion in the sectionals.

School of the Osage (10-12) is the No. 1 seed in District 10 and will host the winner of tonight’s game between fourth-seeded Warsaw (6-10) and fifth-seeded Versailles (4-20) in the semifinals Wednesday. The other semifinal will pit second-seeded Eldon (7-15) against third-seeded Buffalo (9-14) tonight.

The District 10 title game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Osage.
