U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao will resign on Monday, according to a statement she posted to Twitter.
In her statement, Chao said the violent storming of the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday by supporters of President Donald Trump following a rally he addressed “has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.”
Chao, who has served as Transportation Secretary for Trump’s entire presidency, in her statement said she and her team would be helping President-elect Joe Biden’s announced choice for Transportation Secretary,former South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg, in the transition. Biden will be inaugurated Jan. 20.
